I had read this too somewhere. TR proposed to Saint-Gaudens at a White House dinner to redesign America's coinage. Both men were reported to be enthusiastic over high-relief Greek coins. "The Life of the Saint", Jon Blackwell, COINage, June 2007, pg. 18, 22. TR interest leads me to believe he was a collector, but I don't know for sure.
John Quincy Adams collected coins, including ancient Roman coins. His collection was owned by the Massachusetts Historical Society, but sold by auction in 1971. here is one of the coins from his collection:
