This one was my first coin I bought myself. I remember those hot summer days back in 1985. We visited good old Heidelberg, the whole Family was together. In a coin shop an elderly, friendly man gave me this gem near melt. Every time I see this coin I recall these good old days.
Heidelberg was one of the most magical places I ever visited too. The memories of it in my head are almost dreamlike the place was so charming.
My mom gave me a few coins when I was in Boy Scouts. Among them was a 1908-S Indian Head cent that would probably grade VG or F and A very nice AU 1912 quarter eagle that had been in her grandpa’s change purse when he died. I still have both and will never sell either one.
My grandfather always gave the grandkids a partial set of Lincolns when they were born. Later on, I helped him sort coins in their kitchen. I was the only one of the grandkids that continued collecting.
My grandmother gave me 1869 silver 5 franc that her father brought with him when he immigrated from Belgium
My father said I could start a collection of anything I wanted from his change jar. I chose buffalo nickels because I didn't want to compete with my older brothers for the Lincoln Cents. It was 1957 and there were still lots of dated buffalos in change and I liked their look. I didn't know it then but they had already been picked clean of rare dates and high grades by that time. The first one I can still almost picture. It was a nice VF 1936 with nice even wear. I got six or seven different dates that first day and ended up being able to complete the collection after buying several from coin dealers.
It was my 5th birthday (1972). In my birthday card from my Dad was a 1925 Peace dollar (the year he was born)… I still have it. On my 7th birthday I found an 1899 $1 Silver Certificate (Black Eagle), which was the year my grandfather was born... and started my love of currency, too.
When I was a small child, each time I lost a baby tooth I received a newly issued silver clad Kennedy half dollar. All the coins were kept in a special jar. None of the coins were ever spent. I have had all of them for more than 50 years. Formally, with the intention of collecting, my grandmother gave me a series of circulated coins in 1969 in order to get started; an 1859 Indian Head cent, a 1937 Buffalo nickel, several Mercury dimes, a 1942S Washington quarter and a 1958P Franklin half dollar. I still have all these coins.
First coin I purchased was a silber groschen from the mid 1800s. I possibly still might have it somewhere.
Well for me the first 2 coins that started off my collection in 1995 and I can't remember which came first was a 1979 p Susan B Anthony dollar which I found at school at the playground and a 1935 Buffalo nickel I found in my grandfathers driveway at his farm
My first coins came from the cash register at Ball's Restaurant where I would eat with my mother and sister every time my mom had bus duty (teacher). This would have been in the 50's and I remember finding a 1916 dime and getting really excited when I saw a mint mark...alas, an S. The first coin I remember buying was a 1909 VDB in high grade, the reason I remember was that I paid $0.95 and someone offered me $1.50 and I sold it...still regret that...
1918-D mercury dime. My mother found it in her change and gave it to me in 1976, when I was 13 years old. I had never seen one before. I have been a collector ever since. Unfortunately, that coin and my entire collection, which at the time was the dime, about 50 wheat cents, and about 7 64-49 Kennedy halves, was stolen from me in 1980. It didn't stop me, though. I just started over....
First coin collected........now let me see. That was a long, long time ago, and the memory is very hazy, but if I had to drop a bomb on it I'd say it was Jefferson nickles. Yanked solely from the pocket change.......
Wisconsin low leaf error. First coin i ever saved for myself. My personal collection is maybe 5 coins. Give most away
When I was c. 10-11 yrs old, my mother showed me an obviously heavy and grimy old canvas sack and wondered if if I would like to have what was in it. When I asked what it was, she said “here” and dropped it into my hands. And I said “oof” or something like that & sat on the floor to look. What it was were close to nine hundred copper-nickel IH cents plus some dozens of flying eagle pennies! They came, she told me, from her father’s family business: a once-thriving wholesale wine & liquor warehouse (with a flourishing saloon and, yes, a free lunch counter) out front. Grandpa would save all the CN’s he came across, and this was his stash. Almost all were in miserable shape, of course and I got rid of most through the years. But there was an 1861 (!) in AU55 which is still in my Dansco..... and THAT one is officially my first coin. D.
(2) Flying Eagle Cents from my Grandmother and I still have them. I also remember my mother coming home with at least 4 Walking Liberty Halves that she got in change at the 5 & dime store. I still have them also I'm 75 and very surprised as to what comes out of the mint and BEP
