NGC has just confirmed one of my piggybackers has found a 1974 Kennedy half struck on a Taiwan $5 coin while hunting rolls for silver halfs! Pretty cool find!
this is the only picture I have of it. It was going to go to PCGS with the last submission but it was $80 to do it that way, and only $35 at NGC but I didn't photograph it with the others in the sub, sadly. There's a record auction from heritage for a AU55 that sold some time back that should have good pictures.

Did the US mint 5 Yuan coins in 1974? Did a US worker "accidentally" drop a 5 Yuan coin into the minting process? How was this coin created? Since this coin was found in circulation, it prob was not made intentionally.
If you read the Heritage listing, it says the US Mint made the coins for Taiwan. So they were already in the same vicinity as the Kennedy's.
It’ll likely be UNC/AU details. Someone it looks like cut into the coin. Maybe to determine the metal? Not sure but it looked much nicer than the AU55 shown at HA. I’ll check through my pictures again to make sure I don’t have pictures of it somewhere hiding on a disk drive. I did find this on my phone.
No I did not read the Heritage listing. But I prefer a coin like this which was made accidentally, since some blanks/coins were left in the bins/machines. I am not a fan of the 70-S quarter on an old silver 1941 Canadian quarter, or the 1913 V nickels. Which were not accidents.
Why did they suspect/flag the coin? Silver edge? Or because it was smaller and lighter as @Pickin and Grinin said...?
Hey! My name is Conin and I am 22 years old and also the owner of this half dollar and the backstory is that me and my step father have done about 2 years worth of going through half dollar boxes with usually about 2-3 boxes every Tuesday of the week. For 1 month we went through 12 boxes EVERY Tuesday and found some CRAZY amounts of silver! Out of that hot streak there was this half dollar that my father thought it was silver and showed it to me. I got a good look of it and figured out this was odd. I had a scale for coins in my room and I brought it out. I noticed that the coin seemed to be solid copper-nickel! It weighed way less than what a regular half dollar should weigh and took it to a local coin shop that we were good friends with the owner and they had a $20,000 metal analyzer in their shop. Had it tested and it was completely Copper-Nickel! Did some more extensive research to find out that it was struck on a foreign planchet. I linked up the weights of the Taiwan 5 Yuan with the weight of the half and they matched! After sitting in our house for about a year waiting for a sponsor to send it to. Found Mr.Johnson on a Facebook group and seen that he takes coin submissions for PCGS and NGC. I personally prefer PCGS but it would cost me a good bit of money to have this coin graded by PCGS so I went with NGC this go round and got lucky!
