I will reveal what I think that is, Jochen, when we find out what is on the other side.

That's starting to sound like Elagabalus to me. But was he a sailor? I think there were sailors on some of his coins. (?)

    Edit: no, never mind.

    Time for the fourth clue:

He was done in by his best buddy(?) what a way to go!

Hadrian was peaceful, sailed and liked boys. But the way you said that he "said" that he was peaceful early on makes me think it was someone who turned into a war monger.

You are off on the Emperor, @Ryro - but getting warm (maybe) with the rest.

    Time for the fifth clue:

    Some say he wasn’t legit.

Carausius? Killed by Allectus, his treasurer, naval commander, considered a usurper in Britain, also this just fits Jamesicus's MO (Britain).

You nailed it @roman99 - congratulations!

    Key to the clues:
    1. Many of his early coins depict PAX AVG on the reverse - like this one?
    2. He was a renowned Admiral early in his career.
    3. He sought to be recognized by Diocletian & Maximianus (the “boys”)
    4. He was assassinated by Allectus (his “best buddy”?)
    5. The “boys” didn’t accept him as legit.

This coin is an enigma for me - the portrait of Carausius is actually quite nice and well centered and the obverse inscription is quite well rendered (for these coins). I think this pic would serve well as an avatar or as a heading for a Carausian display.

Well, that was fun! At least for me - and somewhat educational. For those who enjoyed this little diversion, thanks is owed to @lordmarcovan for the inspiration.

I would like to offer this coin to @roman99 as a prize for guessing the correct answer (send me a PM if you are interested).

Thanks to all those who participated - maybe we can do it again?

@jamesicus Thanks for the offer, it won't let me pm you, could you try checking your profile please? (I'm interested).

Maybe I'm wrong, but I see Pax.

On the reverse, Ken - the original side shown? I think that is what it is also - hence the first clue.

Yes, that is what I interpret. Seems a figure standing left holding a branch and scepter, and maybe "P A". But then, often we see very strange things on coins!

Yes it is the same to my old, tired, eyes. I relate well to that “see very strange things” - happens a lot to me!

I mailed it to you just now r99 - but you know how slow delivery can be via USPS at this time of year!

There are many lettering combinations on these. I may be seeing the S left of the figure but am making out nothing in exergue. Is it like the one below?

Below is another Pax with an S left of the figure but there are at least three differences of note. One is super significant. Correct?

I simply can’t make it out good enough. But you are so right about the many lettering combinations.

    Yes, that is correct.
