For you Barber nuts out there: I picked up this little beauty (but I am not prejudiced) yesterday at a coin show. What do you all think? Comments welcome, I can ignore anyone. Criticism welcome (see line about). Nice comments, be careful, I have a bad heart.
TC: Thanks for the comment, three dealers agreed that it looks original, probably at least AU-55, possibly AU-58. no real signs of wear. And...start the drum roll please, AU bid is $625, ask= $685. Trends= $850 in AU-50. I got it for $660.
Form the pics it looks to be a very nice coin. One question -- why would such an expensive coin not be certified? Second question -- is this an AU or an XF example?
great coin i have been trying to ge tone. the last sample i was interested in went for over 2k well done
leadfoot: 1) the coini is an AU++ (that is AU-55 or AU-58, what used to be called a slider-- nearly a full unc.) 2) Why not certified? Not everyone slabs every coin, especially if they are a collector-- ask Bonedigger to hear his rant on that subject. Jake: Trends is the old name for Coin World's "Coin Values". I did miss a couple of values, in the latest issue: AU-50 = $850 AU-55= $900 AU-58 = $1,000
Well done, Frank. I'm not real partial to the Barber designs, but coins like that I gotta respect. Rick L.
For the newer collectors out there, this is why I am so excited about this piece: Total mintage: 188,627 #3rd lowest mintage in the series.
that was a 64 should have gone for 1200 but some fool saw an old slab and bid itup like crazy. now the sample i am interested in costs between 2.5 to 4k. its veryhard to get good eye appeal and good technical details on the same coin
barber design is one of the most beautiful design outther ejust pretend its not liberty but barber on the coin and you will have one hell of a time. i know i do
Frank - First - No matter - Great Coin!!! Anyone would be lucky to have it - Congrats! Now to the part where I'm trying to learn without coming across like I'm criticizing. The Blue book says: AU50 - slight trace of wear above forehead, on cheek, and on eagle's head, wings, and tail. EF40 - Liberty Bold and its ribbon is distinct I see wear on the hair, leaves, nose, stars, eagles head, wings, tail, and talons. I don't know how to qualify the word "slight" and I know this series is difficult to find in higher grades but based on just reading the words I would have thought the grade to be a little above or below AU50. What is it that I don't know - besides years of experience . Thanks Darryl
Very nice coin Treashunt but I don't see it going beyond AU53. Of course you have a few more Barbers than I and the highest I have would probably go VF30 so it gets into an area I don't profess to be strong on. Looks VERY original to me and I would have bought same coin if I had two things. 1) Seen it 2) Had the money clembo
I do TRY to give you a hard time on Barbers, but you NEVER give me the satisfaction. However, I cannot even try here. Very, very nice !
Darryl: Thanks for the comments. With the piece in hand you would be able to see that there is little evidence of wear. The areas that you mentioned seem to be more a reflection of the strike of the piece than wear.
Thanks Frank - IMO - thats the problem with photos - they rarely show how nice a coin looks in hand! Again - congrats on a nice addition to your collection!!!
