Got mine today! Here they are:

China, State of Yan, Ming Knife ca. 400-250BC. Obv: 明 Ming, in archaic characters., rev: 右千. Generally these are found in north-east China, from Shandong down through Henan provinces. They are called Ming knives because the obverse character is always Ming on these, with various reverse inscriptions.

Second is an Antoninianus of Claudius II Gothicus
Obv: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate bust, right
Rev: IVNO RE-GINA, Juno stg. left holding patera and scepter with peacock at her feet. Ex. B.

Thank you for the wonderful coins!

    Not so secret, unfortunately.

Here's that poster. I had @asheland go undercover in your shop to tell me which ones you had and didn't have. I thought I recalled getting you the Roman Emperors one, the general one for Ancients, and the English Monarchs one, but didn't know if you had the Byzantine one or not. It should look good with the rest. They dress up the shop walls nicely.

Wish I had done better than just get you stuff to hang on the walls, but you've become a hard person to buy coins for, since you're a bigshot full-time dealer and all now.

A special thank you to my secret Santa. :):):) I've received a copy of "Art in Coinage" by C.H.V Sutherland (first edition) and an absolutely cool & artistic token ca. 1835-1875 with classical imagery of Venus & Diana. The tag states Lauer Firm, Nuremberg, Mitchiner 2049.

    Edit to ad:

My secret Santa included a hand-written note with the gifts. It is written in wonderful (entertaining) script and will forever be kept with the original coin tag. Reading the personal note has given me a warm Holiday feeling which has lasted me though the entire day. Santa noticed my penchant for fine style Greek coins and he/she calculated (correctly) that I would find the artistry of the coin & book of interest. It is so nice to have good virtual friends like this at CT.

I'd like to again thank JA for coordinating this year's Secret Saturnalia and again thank my secret Santa for the fun gift this year.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays everyone.

Same to you, Sir! It was always a tradition in my family to serve Welsh Rarebit or (Rabbit) on New Years Eve. The tradition came to an end back in 2008 when my dear mother passed away. I think you have inspired me to resume the tradition! Thank you, Dafydd!

Sorry, @Mat- I couldn't find the right sized box to ship all this stuff. Out of bubble wrap, too.

And the dang amphora broke. :(

(Seriously, though, I hope you get it soon, wherever it's coming from. Postal delays are all too common this time of year, as you know.)

Umm, some museums might get a little annoyed with me. I'd better not. ;)

Tell ya what, though- I'll stand by as guarantor that you'll get something, if your S.S. package doesn't arrive.

    I expect it will, however.

Like was told to me when the package I sent out was returned and I wasn't sure what to do.
Things happen especially with the good ole USPS, things get slowed things get lost more so this time of the year. Don't stress about it it's nothing we can control, in the end it will work its self out.
I PM'd my recipient and got it back in the mail. I'm hopeful it makes it this time.

But just like Lord M said I will be happy to lend a hand to guarantee something is recieved.

Just remember the backlog of packages the postal workers have to deal with this time of the year. :) Still waiting on that wax, and Movember is loooooooong over.

    IO SATVRNALIA!!

I came home from a long day at work to find this in the mailbox!

    20181219_201719.jpg

Excited, I opened it to find this inside -- a history of the Byzantine Empire and a campgate of Crispus from Alexandria!

How about a close-up of this stunning beauty?

I got my secret saturnalia in the mail yesterday! There were three coins of Constantius that are well outside of my collected an area, but one of them was a follis so gorgeous it made me gasp when I opened the package-- maybe I should reconsider.

Many thanks to my secret saturn!

(pictures to follow... they may unfortunately be a bit belated as I am about to leave on a massive trip)

I see I wasn't the only one who had the "book and coin combo" idea. Excellent.

    Io Saturnalia!

I was woken up today by a long anticipated sound; international mail! The mailman had a lovely package from the US for me. Wait… I hadn’t ordered anything recently, right? So this must be from my Secret Saturn! The excitement was getting to me; I ripped open the package instantly and was immediately flabbergasted by the awesome gifts my Saturn included. A lovely book on a fascinating period of history I sadly lack much in-depth knowledge on. This book is sure to change that!

    DSC03236 (2).JPG

Diving deeper into the package, I was greeted by this lovely trio of Asian coins:

    DSC03238.JPG

A beautiful ant nose with a great find-patina. Wow, right up my alley! And if that wasn’t enough already, a nice Japanese Kanei Tsuho from Jumantsubo. I have a small sub-collection of these Kanei Tsuho’s (you’ll often encounter them in lots of Chinese cash) and I just so happen to miss this specific mint. Lastly, a nice ‘Chiselled-rim’ Wuzhu. Who doesn’t love these? I sure do!

Massive thanks for the incredibly thoughtful gifts! I think that quite some effort went into selecting these coins, which truly means a lot to me. An incredibly nice way to start the holiday season, they will all get a special place in my collection! By the way, I think I, through some Sherlock Holmes-style deduction, have figured out who my generous Saturn was. Thanks again ;)!

As for my package; according to tracking, it should be arriving today. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Wow, it's good you got a knowledgeable Saturn! I would not have had a clue how to select such specialized, well-targeted gifts for you, since I know so little about ancient Far Eastern coins.

I will say that ant nose looks neat, with that bluish patina.
