I was on the U.S. Mint's website to purchase some uncirculated $25.00 rolls of the George Washington dollar coins and the James Madison dollar coins. The listing of the $25.00 rolls had George Washington D (GW3). The listing for the $25.00 rolls of the James Madison P (JM4). I know that the D stands for Denver Mint. I know that the GW stands for George Washington. What does the number 3 stand for? I know that the P stands for Philadelphia. I know that the JM stands for James Madison. What does the number 4 stand for? Thanks. Great website! I'm new to the numismatic hobby....
It's what's referred to by statiscians as a "nominal number," meaning it has no special signifdicance except to distinguish one item from another. A good example of this would be say, the numbers on the back of football jerseys. The magnitude of the number means nothing, it's just a way of distingushing between one player and another player with a different number. They could have easily just used letters instead.
Not exactly true. Football player's numbers are assigned according to their position: 01 - 09 Quarterbacks and kickers 20 - 49 Running backs and defensive backs 50 - 59 Centers and linebackers 60 - 79 Defensive and offensive linemen 80 - 89 Wide receivers and tight ends 90 - 99 Defensive linemen and linebackers (Feel free to correct me regarding details of the above. I do not follow football. Now baseball is a different matter entirely.)
OK lol well that kind of went beyond my point which was that it doesn't mean anything that a player has number 3 as opposed to number 4... the value of the number has no special meaning, just that one number is assigned to one player while another number is assigned to a different player. That they're further sorted by the first digit doesn't negate my point (if anything it reinforces it since that first digit has no special meaning as to its magnitude, just that different digits are assigned to different positions in order to tell them apart.)
ok.. you guys stepped on something I actually know. This list is fairly correct, but incomplete. Let me give you the official NFL rule: In 1973, a jersey numbering system was adopted, April 5: 1-19 for quarterbacks and specialists, 20-49 for running backs and defensive backs, 50-59 for centers and linebackers, 60-79 for defensive linemen and interior offensive linemen other than centers, and 80-89 for wide receivers and tight ends. Players who had been in the NFL in 1972 could continue to use old numbers. You are correct in the 90-99 rules, but they are not mentioned in the offical rule. I know this is WAAAAAAAY off topic, let's get back to our regularly scheduled program.
Presidential Dollar Coins Thanks for the welcome everyone! I thought I might have gotten on board a little too late. In other words I thought (GW3) might have been the 3rd printing of the George Washington's and the (JM4) was the 4th printing of the James Madison's and so on and so forth. I was told that these were going to be produced in very limited numbers. Half of what they did for the Delaware state quarters. I was also told that the JFK & Ronald Reagan dollars will be a very hot item...
