A couple of years ago I decided to stop being a lurker and engage in the coin discussions. I am here because I like talking coins with other knowledgeable people and sharing photos and grading coins, and learning and teaching. I've never been here just to engage in verbal cage matches or grudge fests. I try to stay out of those threads, but I do read them, and some people on some occasions have gone farther than they should in my opinion. However, most of my experiences here have been positive.

I disagree with you Ben about the Mods, and this forum. BTW - I'm not on the fast track to being a moderator so I have no agenda other than to disagree. You seem to be calling out the Mods for being "rude" and over controlling - I don't see much difference in your behavior. I read the first thread beginning to end and I saw nothing but opinions from Doug and Cave Troll. You actually told "Troll" to go away and stay out of the thread. Talk about stern, doesn't he have the same right as the rest of us to participate in a thread? I might substitute honest with personal on this one.

I want to talk/learn about coins/notes and this is a little too personal and opinionated for me - but that’s just my opinion. :)

For the record - I'm not sternly correcting you - I'm just disagreeing with your original question.

I like this forum and it has greatly increased my skill and enjoyment of the hobby. I haven't noticed any real changes. I personally don't mind bluntness, which can be confused with rudeness. Many problems can be averted with simple declarative sentences. Just in case, I'll try to be more polite.

Well, it says there are 5,411 members here. Anytime over 5000 people are put together in one place, there are bound to be occasional skirmashes and disagreement. If that many people were always in agreement and of the same opinion, it would seem an awfully phoney place with little if anything of interest.

Interesting take on things Coleguy, thanks for posting. Well thought out and addresses a human aspect which so many try to cover up -- Themselves. My OldMan told me and my little brother "to be truthful to yourself first, never be phoney..."

For those of you who are wondering, this IS how I come accross to the folks I deal with on a daily basis. A spade is a spade and I call everyone a friend, one and all. A Straight Shooter with no hidden agendas does take some getting used to though.

I'm happy with the thread and it's ripples...

I agree. But this is about coins. Slabbed/not slabbed. Cleaned/not cleaned. Penny/cent. But there is nothing in here that calls for personnel insults.

Not to go off topic, but this is the exact point I make about TPGs lol... that whatever grade they put on a piece of plastic is just an opinion...

Anyway good point, but 99.9% of the time discussions seem to be reasonable opinion vs. opinion and rarely devolve into personal attacks, and the rare times they do the admins are quick to put a stop to it. Reasonable discussion seems to be the norm here and most seem to understand that even when arguing against someone else's idea to attack the idea, not the person. Seems to work out better than a lot of other message boards I've seen.

You are all quite correct, opinions are opinions and everybody has one. But there are also those little things called facts. Facts are different than opinions - they are either right or they are wrong. And it seems to be that some people get the most upset when it is pointed out to them that their facts are in error.

That should not be. Rather it should be that when someone corrects information that you personally believe to be true, and proves it - then you should have an open mind and be grateful to them for providing you with the correct information. After all, our purpose here is to learn and fun while doing so.

there is also a slight difference between the opinion of the top TPG's versus others they are willing to put money where their mouth is (or opinion) in other words if PCGS graded your coin a 67 and it later downgraded toa 66 while in the slab they would compensate you. opinion backed by money is not just an opinion its a guarantee and thats what people pay for
