It seems a bit much to me I wish I had bought some Special Mint Sets a few years ago when the notion hit me (not that I seriously believe I would have a 5-figure coin in my collection today). https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/2018/12/1967-sms-ms-69-ultra-cameo-12600.html You may have to disable your ad-blocker to get the Coin World site to load.
I'll never understand these astronomical prices for these common coins, even if they are highly graded. To me it's like a $10 coin. "Oh it's a Special Mint Set!" Big deal.
"Condition rarity". Now, find another one raw that'll grade the same, and you can smack down the value of this'n. This one looks like an initial strike from a fresh pair of dies.
unique in this grade for now. Will anyone give this poor fellow a refund when a better on shows up or refund the previous owners of BEST coins? This and all the others are excellent coins to sell and lousy investments to buy. You are paying for bragging rights and they are fleeting.
If I had $12600 to spend on coins, I could think of a lot of other things I would rather have than that.
I agree 100%...I'm not in any position to take risk like this...these people have deep pockets and aren't afraid to spend. For now, I 'll enjoy my MS68 with a bit less contrast.
Wow! I am going to look through my 1966& 1967 SMS sets. Question. Do you send in the entire set or just break out the Kennedy Half for grading?
The elitist ideology and pricing, is just putting 99% of the hobbyists on the sidelines. I still love coins, but the hobby not so much anymore. There's always some excuse why something is so over priced. Oh it's the best one in this grade. It's the lowest serial number we've ever seen for this Duesendorf/Widget note. Blah blah blah. This is the result of having independent grading companies.
That’s a $30 coin in a $12500 holder. 99% of its value is the holder; the coin itself would never sell for anywhere close to that.
Cue the self proclaimed YouTube Numismatic experts with their clickbait titles for attention. "1967 KENNEDY HALF WORTH $12.6K!!" "YOU CAN FIND THIS COIN ROLL HUNTING! OMG!" "RARE 1967 KENNEDY HALF WORTH $12K FOUND COIN ROLL HUNTING!"
It's a spectacular coin and may be worth it to some people but if I'm spending that much for the cameo designation I'd want a stronger cameo. MS-69 is certainly special but the '67 comes fairly clean anyway. There may never be another 69 though. I've looked at a lot of these and they seem to top out at 68.
