Received mine today, wish there was a woman around here to put up a tree I'd show a photo. Merry Christmas Ya'll. I will have to talk to the elves and see if my gift made it to the sleigh yet?
Well, it's probably one of my absolute favorite slabs. It's a gen 4 NGC slab, by favorite is the gen 3 with the gold embossed NGC logo on the back. The generation of that slab seems to have been a fairly conservative time period for NGC. A lot those coins I have found to be solid for the grade or under graded. Don't get me wrong, they were not all home runs, in fact my favorite local shop has a common date Morgan in one of those slabs that I turned down. Trust me it wasn't easy to do, but it was the right move. Besides that, they have a very nice feel and look to them. Finding one with a full and intact hologram is not always the easiest thing. A lot of them have damaged holograms from dealers stickers over the years. The plastic polishes up really nicely and you can get them to look brand spanking new with ease.
I’ll take a crack at this (pun intended). There’s a general belief that back then, grading standards were a bit tighter and thus more accurate. They’re also older, which gives them their own history. Lastly, if the coin in the slab is still beautiful as it was then, it lets us know it wasn’t improperly cleaned or dipped. For example, a blast white Morgan in today’s NGC slab vs one from several slab generations ago mean different things. Some people go out of their way to collect older slabs. I’m no slab expert, but I would not personally crack that out.
You see, the plastic is collectible in itself. The fact that there also happens to be a nice coin inside is a separate issue.
Received my SS gift. Thanks Santa. Now the wait! I finally got what I was looking for to send my SS. Shipping tomorrow.
Let me say one thing ahead of time. Sometimes in the past, people have been "bummed" by what they received. Remember we have lots of young numismatists on here and they might have limited means, so be nice...be grateful.
Somebody probably only collects those types of slabs. I heard the "no centerline types" were harder to come by, plus making photos of it/the coins would be better than the newer ones where it's difficult to get a good scan from them.
I see.... Well from all the people and advise they've given, I'll keep it in the slab. Not sure if I'll go for a slabbed Buffalo Nickel set now or continue to persue raw.... decisions, decisions...
Wise counsel, and definitely a point to remember. We don't all have big budgets. 'Tis the spirit of the thing.
Me too. I had to compromise safety and security over a full coin plaque, and settle for slabs too. If you wonder what I'm talking about when I say "plaque" PM me, I'll get you a link on google.
You can if you like. I was shooting for a $20 value, but did the best with what I had. (No pun intended). I asked my recipient if they liked it, they said they loved it, thank you... I went through the extra effort to have it PCGS graded = MS-64 and silver Hope this helps you decide what to propose as a gift.
Hi, sorry, but I was going off of the rules on the first post, which said the target gift value is $15. I would advise against suggesting someone ought to go through “the extra effort” to get something graded to gift it. Grading alone costs more than $15. Also, this thread is called Secret Santa. I’m not sure why you contacted your recipient to ask questions on if they liked it (who would be rude enough to say no?) but your post tells me that maybe you’re missing the spirit of secret Santa. Also, several posts ago, I said my gift had been sent out and would arrive by Christmas. Cheers.
