    Yep! Roller dies!

This coin was struck that way, giving it an ever-so-slightly bowed/curved/bent appearance when examined in hand, before it went into the slab. Obviously PCGS took that into account, because they straight-graded it.

German States (Teutonic Order): silver 1/4-thaler of Grand Master Maximilian of Austria, ca. 1615

    Primarily directed at @Oldhoopster & @lordmarcovan - but I'd appreciate a variety of responses.

How does one tell if an old coin is minted with roller dies or is hammered? I presume it's obvious but it is not clear to me at all.

And back to the roller dies. So, the strip of metal is mashed through the roller dies. Then the coins would be cut out somehow or did the roller dies cut the coin out?

    Let's use this as an example - a 1600 3-kreuzer Pfalz-Zweibrucken (KM 2). Hammered or roller die?

    Thanks!

It's a good question, but one I'm not really qualified to answer. Sometimes the flan is just not quite flat on a roller-die coin. You know how a Pringles potato chip is shaped? Well, the roller-die coins I've seen (admittedly few) have that sort of bowed look, though in a much, much more subtle way, of course.

I'm not even close to being an expert. But I have number of the Baltic Solidii that I bought cheap during wild ebay days in the early 2000's (Delusions of putting together a date set ). Since some had cool off center strikes and I wanted to learn more. I believe Robert Kokotailo of Calgary Coins posted some info years ago on a chat board that helped me understand. If the rollers get out of alignment you'll get coins with the obv and rev not matching up. The pic below shows how coins were cut from the "minted" strips.

How can you tell if it was from a roller press? I saw some info that this method was developed in the 1550's so I generally guess that any small, thin silver/billon coins through the mid 1650's were made like this. My GUESS is that your 3 Kreuzer was on roller press. Remember, I know just enough about this topic to sound like I know what I'm talking about, so some of this info may not be correct (but it sounds good to me :))

So I started a business with a buddy about a year ago (one of the main reasons I haven’t been on here much for a while) and coins and bullion are a common interest. He’s always been into bullion and coins that he just thinks look neat, but I got him a 1861 3c anacs AU50 for Christmas to boost his collection a little. The thing is, one thing he likes the most about coins is being able to handle them. So I know the fact that it’s in a slab is going to piss him off, but hey, it’s an awesome coin to get started into more numi valued coins for the collection.

    Thanks for hosting, Rob!

I’ll post a couple new pickups that fall into the one-sided CC category. Alas, a true CircCam carries the full field/devices contrast on both sides, but I’m still quite fond of these, which at $15 and $34 respectively are steals IMO for two attractive original/problem-free coins.

Well, it took you long enough to enter, didn't it? I figgered a fella with a username like "CircCam" would have been entered long before now! ;)

Since it's your nom de guerre and all, I suppose I should make this your second entry, to give you two chances in the drawing, like I did for Noah Finney in Post #3.

So if the random number generator lands on this post (#77), you've won, just as if it had landed on your regular entry (#76). :)

Thanks! To be honest researching the giveaway coins led me down Wikipedia lane into some very interesting historical areas and I completely forgot that I never entered. Glad it’s not too late!

Was worried the giveaway goodies weren't suitably tempting for you to enter, after seeing them.

But if they sent you Wikipedia-surfing, all is well and as it should be.

Oh wow that's so cool I didn't even know that! I'm not entering but I learned something new today. So when did modern minting with two dies and a pre crafted planchet come into existence? The 1700's?
