should i except to pay a 40.00 dollar differance between a pf69 and a pf70?..i would like to make this coin be my first actual purchase where should I buy..any suggestions?
Depends on what you are trying to do. Are you wanting a graded set? Or do you just like proofs? While others have given you their personal preference - how about letting me know what you are trying to do? If your building a registry I say spend the 40 if that makes you happy. If not, then save the 40 or just buy a proof coin from the mint. I can not tell the difference between a 69 and a 70. And don't get caught up in the holder vs raw debate - it is about what makes you happy.
I wouldn't pay a premium for my first purchase. After you gain more experience you can decide whether you want to pay a premium for a coin. I don't think there is any best place to buy. I'm pretty new at collecting, but I've searched Ebay, websites, Craigslist, US Mint, coin forums, etc. for ASEs. Surprisingly, I found a co-worker who has been buying for 20 years from the US Mint and is willing to sell me some of the earlier ASEs for a discount. He's been subscribing to get the proofs and annual coin sets and has been getting 5 sets of everything.
i guess i should have included what it is I would like to do ...I have a daughter that was born in 03 and 1 maybe 2 on the way that will be born in july ..I would lke to buy something to commemorate these years..if they show an interest in it when they are older I would like to have something nice and maybe even worth alittle to give them..I cant buy gold but i can afford something nice..how about now anyone with a suggestion
I recommend 2 things - as the others posted, buy just a mint proof coin of their birth years. That is first - the second is buy proof sets from those years - just the regular proof set. All of those should be reasonable. Plus it will give each child a nice variety of coins. And last, but not least - CONGRATULATIONS, hope all goes well!
I personally prefer my proof silver eagles in the original holder, rather than a slab. I think it looks alot better that way. Plus I don't see the point in paying extra for slabbing this particular series. Just my opinion though.
