Did you stick to your 2018 numismatic resolutions and what's in-store for 2019?

Going through numerous year-end conversations with my team at work, seeing how we delivered on our shared objectives, stuck to training and development plans, all that fun stuff and I started to reflect on my own numismatic objectives for 2018 and what performance rating I would get based on what I promised myself I'd do this year.

Last December, with my wife pregnant at that time and knowing that my numismatic budget will suffer severely due to all the upcoming changes in my life, my goal was to go review my collecting strategy and the coins i had as part of my primary set to see if I have lost my focus on quality and that "wow" factor that truly make this hobby enjoyable for me. I realized that I did. My desire to complete registry sets resulted in my collection having more and more mediocre coins that I, personally, was not happy with. I did a massive (for me) purge and sold-off just over 20 coins, keeping only the examples that I truly appreciated either from the perspective of quality, rarity, or history behind a particular coin.

At the same time, I was able to add 6 coins that I absolutely love. With my goal for 2019 to be just as selective in the coins I add to my collection.

So, how did everyone do?

My numismatic resolutions for 2018 were the same as ror every year--including next year...

Buy more coins.

I did, so mission accomplished.

 

I had none for 2018 and am just rekindling the passion for the hobby after a five year or so hiatus. My resolution for 2019 will be to subscribe to a few numismatic publications again and to continue looking for Walkers needed for my short set.

Have an official monthly budget based off my biweekly paycheck
Read more numismatic books
Purchase alot less impulse buys

 

I would say I did well in 2018, but I didn't plan to get back into collecting going into the year, but I fell back in out of loneliness I guess. I checked off several coins on my want list, and rebuilt my key date Merc collection.


2019:

Focus on my area of specialty and don't get distracted buying coins of other series that don't fit.

Save and buy the remaining key date Dimes I need.

Refrain from impulsively buying more Semi Key 1921 Mercs.

Refrain from impulsively buying more 1916-D's.

ETA: Something I did plan on doing when I ended my hiatus was to avoid the Numismatic politics and drama. That didn't happen, but I'm a bit less controversial than I used to be.
