I meant Iike the CirCam concept Nah not me. just stating the obvious after the tag team Mano y Mano that we all enjoyed on this thread and I think there my had been wagers on pm or two....lol Fair Debate No Decision too be continued... but certainly Robust! ]
I don't see a choice in the poll for Opportunist. In numismatics, and in most of my other pastimes, I don't focus on getting what I want nearly as much as figuring out what I can do with what I can get my hands on. I think it's partly being raised by parents who were kids during the Great Depression, but I think it might be partly innate as well. So, if I land a big underpriced lot of Morgan dollars, I suddenly find myself spending more time learning about VAMs. If the pawnshop has some 1901-P Morgans that look too good to be true, I learn more about what strike characteristics really are peculiar to that issue. If the next pawnshop has a batch of Barber dimes, I refresh my memory about key dates in that series, and how much of an impact cleaning has on their value (still trying to break that shop of their bad coin-handling habits). In each case, I'm figuring things out -- and that's what I live for. None of this is anything that I'd ever be proud to present at an ANA conference, or post as a registry set, or publish as a book. But it's fun. And, over all, slightly cash-flow-positive. Depending on whom you ask here, that either means I'm not really a coin collector (and certainly not a numismatist), or that I'm some fantastically rare one-in-a-thousand example, or both. And it seems that I'm perfectly OK with that.
Oddly enough, that is the type of work that DOES score well in ANA exhibits. New or forgotten insights.
Guess I'm bad for a couple of things. I have no opinion on if toning is damage, but I don't like it and wouldn't pay extra just because a coin has some. Two of the same coin I want, one with toning and the other without, I'll choose the toneless coin every time. And Facebook is evil.
Problem is, they're only new to or forgotten by me, not the hobby/science as a whole. I've got vague ambitions to dig into some truly novel stuff, but it seems like my ambitions only get vaguer with the years.
That’s where you’ve gone wrong. This stuff HAS BEEN forgotten by everybody. It’s the 21st century, Jeff. No one knows squat any more.
Aw, ain't that cute? He thinks 30 years makes a "stable market". No, sir. It takes 50 years just to attain "interesting persistence" status. 30 is more like "flash in the pan" status. We're talking "durable goods" here, designed to last HUNDREDS or THOUSANDS of years. 30 years. Pffft. I literally own shirts older than 30 years.
All that post proves is that your knowledge of fashion is about the same as your knowledge of numismatics.
Somewhere between B and C. I have completed a few sets, now down to working on the SLQ's and the Morgans. Was doing pretty good on them but now I am down to the more expensive ones so things are going slower. No rush though....
Oh, I have a 1988 car, too. I am the original owner from new. 84K miles. 30 years. Yes, less than 3K per year. We sold the 62 Lincoln this year.
Cool! Is that the Infinity with the engine that was the basis at one time for IndyCar engines, or is that newer? The Infiniti engines ran about half the field in the late 90's. I'm not sure how long that basic engine held on at Infiniti.
Maybe even shake hands before leaving. Bar might have to re-supply in the morn. Cuz i see this as a philly 15 rounder. No gloves
