You know it's real when the counters are griping. Frequently, exhibitors had to WAIT to be able to get near their cases to answer a question about it.

You mean "broke people" do not. The hobby is coin collecting. And real numismatists don't spread conspiracy theories about toning.

You're right. We report our findings.

What was the final tally? Then we will compare that number with the prices realized by the auction, where the real action was.

Which one? There were several session each day, from more than one auctioneer. And the total in-person room was a TINY fraction of the constant number at the exhibits.

Stack's and Heritage total. And don't forget all the people on the bourse floor. Why are you acting like people go to coin shows to see exhibits? I collect coins and don't find them exciting enough to view silly little exhibits. Face it, nobody cares about the little snooze-fest you have going on in the exhibit area.

I find you to be an elitist crackpot. But hey, at least your lunacy is entertaining.

My son also observed that about me. "You know, Dad, you spend five days here and you almost NEVER shop for coins." And he is correct. I can buy all the coins I want and/or need at DEEEEEEEEP discounts from national bourse floor prices. I have NO shortage of appointments however. I am working constantly from sun-up to sundown. There are just so many things I can ONLY get done at a national convention, most of them educational.

Buuuuut I guess when you already know everything, like ol' @Lehigh96 here does, who needs education, right? Just keep picking up more damaged toned crap and keep trying to convince people ugly is pretty, damage is original, and pristine is messed with.

It's all "Through the Looking Glass" class stuff anyway.

    John Skelton Morgan man!

Okay, I've been to only one coin show put on by the state association. I went there because it was in a city that offered my wife and I a chance to also do some sightseeing. But I did have a goal in mind, and I met it. The bourse was where I spent a lot of my time. I did however, find the exhibits both interesting and informative. I think they certainly have a place at coin shows, if for no other reason than they are educational.

Oh nevermind that, John. Paul has spoken. So let it be written, so let it be done. Coin collecting is about the wanton accumulation of more crap. Damaged crap at that. Toned, damaged crap.

I am a old poot on SSI and not healthy enough to get out and do anything that requires a lot of activity. I use to collect guns and was a target shooter. Sold most of them except the ones I keep around the house to ward off anyone bothering my wonderful wife and our useless junk. I have a very low coin budget. I love to get on the internet and read coin magazines about my hobby. It keeps my old brain working a little. No, I have no amazing coins. I collect whatever I feel like buying at the time. I have circulated Morgan and Peace dollars and also Walking Liberty and Franklin halves, the new Proof Silver PCGS69 DCAM Kennedys, Silver Quarters and Silver dimes. Just discovered the reverse proofs and latched on to some of those. I will never own a $10,000 coin but I sure do enjoy the ones I have that are $25.00 or less. The grandkids will get them before long anyway. They are not an investment, but a pleasure for me. I hope that will start them on a great hobby someday. Enjoy the hobby folks and God Bless.

It never occurred to me . I became interested in Coins when a Friend showed me his Silver Rounds Collection/Hoard in '76 . I made my first visit to a Coin Store to buy some and "Something Bit Me" when I saw what was available .
Sets were a consideration but , the Rarity of some issues & Smart Investors squashed that idea .
I really do enjoy taking them out and handling/inspecting them imagining where they've been or spent on .

Having collected all types of US and World coins, tokens, and paper money over a period of 60 years, with pauses from high school thru college and early years of marriage, I am truly a Generalist Collector. The initial general effort concentrated on completing sets of US small cents thru half dollars post Civil War; also Complete Morgan and Peace Dollars. Seated Liberty coins were somewhat lacking. However, I also had a 15 year period of Large Cent collecting by Sheldon and Newcomb varieties, in which Middle Dates 1816 to 1839 lack 3 varieties being complete. For the past 20 years I have collected generally 1700’s thru 1900’s World Coins by type, attempting to find the key date and/or high grade coin of type when feasible. Thus, I could be described as both a Generalist and Specialist collector. As a result, I feel like a kid in a candy store at my favorite LCS.

Oh, so you don't like it when someone attempts to demean or marginalize your passion within the hobby. Then right after whining that I'm being dogmatic, you resort to attacking my collection once again.

PS. "wanton accumulation of more crap" describes your collection which I believe you stated was over 100,000 strong. My collection might not even be 200 coins.

My eldest sister is well-versed in this phenomenon. She calls it metaphorical "you know what" measuring. This hobby has MANY problems, but none more serious than the undeserved feeling that we each are the smartest guy in the room.
