Hello, Ive never really been too into morgans but this one stands out from the rest. It has nice clean fields and almost looks proof like. The fields have a nice mirror like finish to them and the denticles are frosted. And if you take a look at the eagle, is that not alot more detail than whats on most morgans??? Oh and just a note, most of whats showing up in the pic that looks like marks in the field is dust that I didnt want to wipe off so I just left it alone. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
Wow - it does look nice. I only see one or two distracting dings - I would go 64. Now having said that to me the light chatter on the pictures is distracting and makes it hard to see the details in certain areas. So my grade of 64 could be low or way to high - but in my opinion thats about right. I am basing part of it off the frost I see on the cheek and eagle.
Alright thanks for the opinions. Im was right in line with your thoughts as I was thinking 63/64. But Ive never really messed around with morgans much, so I just felt like I needed my opinion backed up. Thank You
Is there wear on the cheek of Liberty, it looks as though there is, if thats the case the best I think it would grade is AU58. Very tough to see if there is wear, I still dont know how to look for it very good. Really Really beautiful coin, I'm still looking to pick up my first one. Jim
It is tough to see on these pictures, but I do not see any break in the frost that would be a sign of wear. Patience - there are plenty of nice morgans to go around. Check out this coin at Harlan Berk - I think it is worth what he has it list for. Yeah - you might do better on a raw coin, but this is one nice puppy. I love the 65's and 66's in morgans. I have been thinking about getting another from them and with my $75 dollar gift certificate it makes this coin a bargain.
The marks on Liberty's face and neck lead me to go with MS62 and I can't imagine that the coin would grade above MS63. Hopefully Liberty's cheek is not artificially frosted, as it looks a bit too white. Also, I can't tell from the images if the area at the "LURIBUS" in "PLURIBUS" is merely lightly hazed over, or if it has been lightly cleaned /wiped there.
Hey thanks for all the opinions. But one question I have, Artificially Frosted..... Well, Im lead to believe its not artificial on the basis, I have had it for 20 years. But, the coin is 130 years old, so I guess its possible. Anyhow, what would I look for inorder to determine this??? Or is that just something that you have to see alot of inorder to distinguish a difference??? Now, you pointed out Pluribus..... I can see what your talking about in the picture. But with the coin in hand, I cant see it. I guess the picture is misleading in that area. I looked both with the naked eye and while using my 7X loupe. Anyhow, theres nothing there and I looked the entire coin over, and it has never been wiped. Thanks again for all the replies.
MS 62 with a bit of cameo contrast, but not enough to get in a PL slab from one of the big three...Mike
Hopefully, I'm just seeing haze and not artificial frosting or wiping on the coin. Images often don't tell the real story. Still, I'd suggest showing it to a couple of knowledgeable collectors or dealers if/when you have the opportunity. Here's a little snippet I found on altered surfaces which might help you determine if your coin has been messed with - note the last sentence: And here's a link to additional comments on the subject that you might find interesting/useful: http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article_view.chtml?artid=2341&universeid=313&type=1
My Morgans always look much better than my photos, but these photos are all I have to go by, sooooo.. This one is MS62. Photos indicate many distractings marks, especially in the all-important focal areas of Liberty's cheek, face, and fields in front of her face. Those marks hinder an otherwise impressive coin, with solid strike and great detail in the hair above the ear and the eagle's breast. Often, photos make these marks look worse than they are. It would be interesting to see it in hand.
Naw man, SGS only grades their coins high. If I sent it to SGS and they actually send something back, Id get a print out of a morgan graded as PO-1 Questionable Authenticity
