What type of Coin Collector are you?

And as for the Registry Awards, those are not presented by collectors. Collectors have no votes in those at all! The Registry awards are selected by the staff at NGC - hand chosen by the professionals at the very top.

To me, there is very little difference between being awarded Best in Show at an ANA Convention and being awarded TWO Best Presented Set Awards for TWO SEPARATE collections from the staff at NGC. (I am the only person in the history of the NGC Registry to win twice). You will disagree about the relative significance, of course, as is your right. You will belittle this as some trifling website and modern dalliance, but you have to realize that in modern collecting, many people view them on the same level.

Yes, it is true. But, for better or worse, UNTIL you can DEMONSTRATE you will judge the way exhibits have been judged before you, you WILL NEVER become a certified judge. They WANT this process to be constant. They are not even slightly "shy" about that. Outliers never get their certification.

 

Yes, I know, and that's what makes it worse. Commercial interests. I have less than ZERO interest in Registry Sets.

 

The Populist Vote is equally as important as the Certified Judge. Sure, there is something to be said for tradition. There is something to be said for academics - I can respect a well researched, thoroughly presented display that follows all of the rules.

But I also really like a set that shows me something new, bucks tradition, might not be the most polished, but is really cool to look at. A stodgy judge isn't going to reward that with many points, but the reality is that something with popular appeal isn't playing to the judges. I don't really care what certification process the judges go through if they select a boring display as their winner.

Avengers won't ever win an Academy Award, but damn its a good movie and I'm going to see it 4 times and I don't care what indie darling wins the Oscar.

Judges are really NOT freelancing or throwing out opinions. Judges are REQUIRED TO confer and discuss their scores to prevent outlier scores. There are about 12 criteria, and each has a starting point and a range, and every "opinion" must be run through a "gauntlet" that includes the other two Class judges and the Chief Judge. All scores REQUIRE justification.

 

I don't get your point or the significance to this discussion? Ok, that's how they judge. Great. If I enter a display in a show, I'll keep that in mind.

 

It's NOT difficult. DO try to keep up.

1) Commercial. BAAAAD thing.
2) Non-educated judges. Bad thing.
3) Trained (to death, really) judges with specific judging tools and standards. Non-profit educational organization. Required to support every score given. Much better.

 

First you might need to step away from the screen and GO TO a convention. Good starting point.

 

Been to plenty of big shows. More than many on these forums, I'd say.

No, and I'm ticked off about it, too. I'm going to NYINC instead. I'm working on finding just the right pieces for a competitive exhibit for Chicago, and it's on a European subject. I was going to blow off NYINC and do Orlando, but a ridiculously good and cheap hotel room a block from NYINC fell in my lap.

 

Seems simple to me.

Expand the exhibits and grading standards for in-person shows to have an online counterpart. Open up the show experience for everyone, everywhere.

I like to spend my time with my wife and I do not anticipate ever attending a major show in my life. But I don't have to be happy about missing out on things designed for people with other lifestyles in different times.

I have now been to exactly 3 local coin shows and I don't expect that number to climb by much.

This is sadly true. Waiting for my future wife to pop out of the woodwork. LOL I'm at a point where I don't think I could date someone seriously who doesn't possess at least some interest in Numismatics. If it weren't for the love of coins I'd already be 6 feet under.

ETA: I think there's more women cigar smokers than women Numismatists! And that's SAD! We need more women in this hobby. I've said it for years I'll say it again. We NEED more women involved. I mean, seriously. One of my favorite coin dealers is a woman. (Shelley Griffiths) As a 15 year old, she was always patient, kind, and willing to educate me.

Sounds like a nice set, but it is NOT a competitive exhibit. How do I know? There is a press release. The exhibitors of the competitive exhibits are closely held secrets. No media releases. FUN does have some of the nicest exhibits, though. It's where both my son and I received our ANA Exhibit Judge qualifications, me in U.S., him in European coins. This so-called exhibit (it's not really, it's a commercial display at a booth) will be nowhere NEAR the actual exhibits.

 

I think SPECIALIST is the most appropriate choice for me out of those given. However, while I do tend to work on one set at a time, I tend to switch from one set to another sometimes. I have set my Peace Dollar set aside for now, because the last three coins I need are currently above my budget, so I'm working on my US type set right now.
