I dislike almost all of our circulating modern commemorative quarters and many of the collectible commemoratives. They are mostly simplistic, cartoonish, low-relief designs, probably to reduce design / tooling / production costs. Let's have some more real coinage . . . give us some artistry and some relief!
Lots of coins I don't care for. I understand the economics of modern coins and low relief, but why can't they make collector coins in higher relief? While I hate dead president designs, the quarter is fairly decent looking when struck like they did in the silver era of higher relief. Wouldn't most collectors spend a few more dollars for high relief versions of proof coins? Of course I am with most people disagreeing with the OP. I find that design one of the best the US ever did. Too bad so scarce. Maybe someday, but there are SO MANY gorgeous ancients.........
I only began collecting in '76 after seeing friends Silver Rounds Hoard . Upon visiting a Coin store I discovered Seated Liberty coins and that was that . All versions of Lady Liberty are irresistible to me . IMO the Mint should have continued using her for our coinage and used Presidents , Famous Individuals & Historic Events to Commems . No Ugly coins were minted imo but $1.00 denomination never should have been Shrunk Down .
I agree with that. A dollar size coin should be more successful in a traditional dollar size. As I recall though, folks didn’t exactly take to the Ike dollars either. Seems I remember hearing they were too heavy and bulky in modern trousers. I fear we will always be stuck with odd size dollar coins that never circulate.
There are very few coins I don’t care for but I agree with the OP. I wouldn’t be averse to owning one, however. Unlike most, I like the newer nickels but they should have kept the bison reverse. Nice. The latest version of Lady Liberty on the 225th Comm. is gorgeous, I think. I was ready to dislike it as PC nonsense but she is so well done and the face so attractive that the coin won me over.
I don't care for the shield nickel even tho it's replete with nice doubled dies and other varieties (and I'm into stuff like that.) And I wholeheartedly agree with this statement above- "Lots of coins I don't care for. I understand the economics of modern coins and low relief, but why can't they make collector coins in higher relief? While I hate dead president designs, the quarter is fairly decent looking when struck like they did in the silver era of higher relief. Slightly rewording my original post. I do like the reverse, I love the outspread eagle wing concept. The obverse figurehead does not appeal to me
Anything minted during or after the 90s. Also not a huge fan of barber coins, but appreciate their place in our history.
Not really a fan of the modern commemoratives and Zincolns. Nah, just kidding, I know many aren't Morgan fans here.
I hate the new quarter series, both state and america the beutiful, they make new designs unexciting I wish instead that they would just have perhaps 1 or 2 set quarter designs they used for the next 60 years. But knowing the US mint they are going to come up with another stupid series like idk best state toasters.
I think the problem with the ike dollar was that many people didn't understand it. Too much time had passed between the last minting of a dollar coin, and the stigma was "This coin is special. Try not to spend it" although that certainly wasn't the case. Alot like the small dollars and $2 bills we see today. Not to mention that the design was pretty ugly. Ike isn't very handsome in coin form, and the obv fields are too big. At least with the morgan and peace dollars the engraver tried to use as much space as he had. Then the reverse plays into the circumstance that recycled designs are flat out boring. Yes, the eagle and earth in the background is nice, but is it original at all? Did anyone take the talent and work to make something original? Nah, lets just copy that stuff from the apollo missions.
I’m not going to burn you at the stake. Each to his own. Although the series is a mainstay of mine, Liberty does bear somewhat of a resemblance to a veteran NFL lineman.
The ugliest U.S. coin design in my view is the shield nickel. Also is the matron head cent as a close second.
Full disclosure: I am a Morgan dollar fan. That said, what about Lady Liberty on the Barber coin series? When I was a kid, I thought that was a dude on the obverse of the Barber coins. I didn't make that mistake with the Morgan dollar. However, I have to add that the Barber coins are not my least favorite U.S., coin. I am in a "group" of 1 who believes that the St. Gaudens double eagle is the least attractive as a U.S., coin. Reasons: Too much going on to fit on a coin. Lady Liberty's eyes look unnatural, ghostly; her arms and leg are too thick, and her arms look weak and awkward, ready to collapse. The design is very French, very continental, to the point it looks like a foreign coin. [I am going to regret this post.]
