    Hey guys,

Im having a really difficult time trying to compare mint state coins with AU coins.

it says that the difference in MS vs. AU is slight wear on the highest points of the coin.

How do you guys tell if there is "slight" wear on the high points of the design, ive seen examples and I still cant see the wear that they are talking about!!

Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated!

First you need to identify the highest points on the coin. There are plenty of reference guides that point out these locations.

Look for luster on these high points. If the luster is broken that may be an indication of wear. If the luster is still present the coin may have a weak strike.

what you are asking is one of the hardest points of coin grading. One i have never mastered. Hobo gave a great suggestion - buy books. look at grading sights (accugrade) that post pictures with grades. The more you study, the better you will become.

I hate to suggest all this research, but coin grading can not be taught with one or 2 questions.

Changes in texture (not as smooth) and luster (might appear dull) on the high spots, normally portions of the the hair and cheeks on the obverse and the breast area of the Eagle on the reverse (if it has one).

    Take Care

I hope to be able to answer this question in July AFTER taking one of the ANA grading courses.
