Hey folks, Just picked this up as part of a partial type book I purchased for my son for Christmas. A pretty considerable die crack from U to U on the obverse. Anyone have any insight or VAM input. Grade input would be appreciated as well. Thanks!
Here ya go http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1899-O_VAM-22 I'd personally grade it MS62
Teach your son to VAM Morgans! It is a great hobby and an intellectual stretch that will keep him (and you) busy for years.
+1 Always start with the date position btw Mark. Unless there is some feature that jumps out at you like a huge die gouge or die break. This example is a near date so, it ruled out about 85% of the other vams almost immediately. Hope this helps
I did notice the near date by lining up the one over particular denticles. Thanks for the advice for using this as a starting point. I assume the VAM22 doesn't add any significant value?
Yes, scroll down this page about 1/4 of the way and it gives a good explanation of how to determine which date position you have. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/Attribution_101 Or you could just read the whole thing and get a pretty good tutorial on vamming
My recommendation. It can be a lot of fun, you further develop your eye for detail, you get to learn more about your coins and the minting process, and once in a while you'll find something that someone will pay serious money for.
