I bought this Penny last week. It is an Edward The Confessor S-1183, but I am not able to tease the mint out. Looks like it starts with "SN..." but the third letter is clearly not "O," so Nottingham (SNOTING) is out. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
SN at the start would be the moneyer’s name I think. At the end you have ‘ON EO’ (which I saw on another poster with the same coin recently...). I’m not sure what ‘EO’ is, but I would guess ‘Eboracum’ (York). I don’t have any books with me to check at the moment (and my general caviat that I haven’t delved into Anglo-Saxon issues much, so take this with a grain of salt)
@FitzNigel Of course you are correct about the format of the reverse inscription "Moneyer ON Town." I feel a bit stupid for forgetting to apply that here. Spink does not show and "EO" mintmark for York, but that certainly sounds logical. I'll have to drag out North.
Moneyer is Sneborn, who was indeed active in York at this time. While on this particular reverse-die Eboracum is abbreviated as ‘Eo’, some (most, actually) of his other dies for this type show ‘Eof’ instead. Nice catch, a somewhat rare moneyer from an awesome ruler! Oh, and why not share my only Edward the confessor for the fun of it! S-1175 (small flan type), Godwine on London:
