WOW! Send it in immediately. It's worth at least 500k! Probably more toward 1 mil!

(PS this isn't true. Please don't send it for grading :p)

Do you really think it came out of the mint dies looking like that?

I just started collecting coins about 2 week's ago so I'm not too familiar with all of the errors yet, but I was told that this is a defective die error.

Wow... most 70 year old coins still floating in constant circulation haven't even seen that amount of wear and tear. Someone put it out of its misery! :nurse:

Well welcome to Coin Talk! Glad to have another person interested in coins! I'm curious who told you that this was a defective die error? We will help lead you in the right direction and I hope that you learn a lot from everyone here! In the meantime, try this website if you are going to be searching through lincoln cents (not pennys).

Welcome to Coin Talk. I've been searching for two or three months now. The first 2 weeks, I weighed, magnified, separated years in different piles, and just got the feel for the Lincoln cent in general. It really helped. Now I can tell a lot about the coin just by glancing at it.
Coin Talk folks have been great and generous with their information. Stay here, talk and you won't go wrong!
Wow, I thought you had typed in the wrong date. I thought you meant 1917! These new coins have terrible metal components. They wont last long before getting damaged. Do you have The Red Book by Yeoman? I just received it. A wonderful reference.

    Damaged.
Again most coins are not worth getting graded. In most cases
it needs to be old, rare, valuable etc.
Sometimes you could find a modern valuable error, but these coins
are extremely rare. The mint produces billions and billions of coins
and there are really only a small handful of errors that aren't minor and
    worth grading.

As stated by other members this coin is damaged and only worth face value. Whoever gave you the idea it's an error and worth money knows a lot less about coins than you do as a new collector.

Get a book on Mint errors so your understanding can be increased and you'll know what to look for.

Can I ask who told you that the coin is an error?

Funny, I was wondering the same thing. Was it a coin seller? Or was it someone playing a prank?

Rule of thumb - Whenever someone tells you that something is valuable and you should slab it have them make an offer to buy it as is and get their name and phone number. Do your due diligence and learn the truth about the coin. If it is rare sell it for the best price you can get. If it is not what the person said it was "make their day" and sell it to them at their price. No need to rub it in. Let them learn for themselves how wrong they were.
