Newbie who just joined today. Get the usual I know very little about coins out of the way now. I don't have that much interest in them but inherited some in the last 5 years and finally starting to go through them some. Thought I would get better insight and more information from everyone on here.

Here is what I have found so far. They are a 1879 S, 1880 S, 1881 S, and a 1899 O all in pretty good shape. These were bought in the 70's and stored away in a cabinet until I got them about 5 years ago. Seeing what they book for and around what they actually sell for in this condition. I collect sports cards so know it is all about the coin and condition. Think these are fairly common ones just in good shape. Would appreciate any info. Thanks Mark

If those are PVC flips you may want to get a better holder for them so they are not going to get residue on them, but they are very good coins.

Welcome to Cointalk. Your Morgans look like nice coins, but verifying grades like MS65 requires good, out of the holder pictures that show the luster, etc. and is still somewhat of a guessing game. I would caution you to take the grades on the inserts with a grain of salt, however... in this hobby one learns to be a little skeptical.:)

Appreciate the responses so far. Yeah anything written on those cases would have been from the seller. They were bought by my grandpa in the late 70's. Until this week they haven't been out of the little white envelope for over 40 years. On the envelope it has what they are, labeled like on the holder with the coins, sellers name I presume(says Bill Puetz), year and month bought 77 and price bought for. As not having that much knowledge on coins am little skeptical to take them out. Should I get them graded at all? I do know not to clean them :) haha

I would get them out of those flips ASAP. I’d suggest some coin capsules such as Artites. They’re cheap.

Those do appear to be very nice high quality Morgan’s. Congratulations and welcome to CT!

If you are looking to sell, that's a valid question.
Like you said, they are common dates. So the question is whether they would grade highly enough for it to be cost effective. They may need to be examined in hand by a qualified and trustworthy individual. They likely would need to have a good shot at MS65 or better (and be problem free) to justify the costs of certification by PCGS or NGC.
Personally I think ICG or ANACS do OK with generic Morgans, their holders generally sell at a discount to the Big Two, but their fees are less.

If you want, some better pictures here may get you some better opinions. Just handle the coins by the edges without touching the obverse or reverse. Carefully lay them on a flat surface, set a couple of desk lamps at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock, and take some straight-on photos.

Thanks for the help to all. Let me know if this helps any. If not is faulty photography on my end :) Just took front and back of 1879 S to start.

Any estimated values of each one?

Plus if sent in for grading, what sort of declared value would you think?

They all look like very nice Morgans around the MS-62 - 64 range, with plenty of original mint luster!

Don't clean them, that reduces the value. I wouldn't have them graded - I don't think that they are worth enough to justify the grading fees.
If you decide not to have them graded, put them in new Airtite or 2 x 2 holders. The old ones might be made of PVC, which can cause adverse affects to the coins.

I agree with SD2017. Nice coins, but I'm not seeing gem grades. Possibly $35-$65 apiece on value. Not worth paying grading fees - you won't recapture the extra cost when you sell.

Appreciate all of the responses and info. Always nice to get more insight especially on something I don't have much knowledge on.

I did take them to two local coin shops this morning. All I said was trying to get more info on them.

First shop said he usually pays $10-15 each and said they looked nice. Offered me $20 each

Second shop calculated would try to get around $200 for all of them.

Obviously coin shops will offer to buy at some kind of wholesale price, they have a lot of overhead.
IMHO, if you can get $200, from anywhere, you did all right.
