Hello, Here i have a 1796 Liberty cap cent. I have been trying to attribute this coin with the help of Breens book. So far i have tentatively narrowed it down to Sheldon varieties 82 or 83, and that was quite a task! The differences, at least to me, are so minute. Can i please ask one of the large cent experts in the forum to please confirm this. I would also like to have your opinions on its net grade. The coin is dark brown in color. No porosity is apparent, but it does have some marks, more noticeably on the face. Thank you very much for your help. Eduard
If you send it to me I will attribute it to my collection. Really though I can't be of any help, but I love the coin. Any thing older than 1800 gets my attention quickly.:thumb:
Hi Eduard, It's an S82, and a nice one at that. The reverse die is the same for both varieties. The main difference on the obverse is in the positioning of the digits in the date. The length of the pole is also shorter on the S83 as well as having a die crack joining the bust and pole on most coins of that variety.
I lust after pre 1800 Large Cents, especially the Liberty Cap's, I will soon be shopping for a nice one for my new 7070, this is going to be fun !!!
Eduard, Another beautiful and old coin! Thanks for sharing! I believe that it has F-15 details but appears that it may have had a very old cleaning. Frank
Thank you everyone! I was rather excited when i thought this coin may be an S-82 or S-83. The Breen book says it is High Rarity 4. Now you have confirmed that. I don't know about the cleaning, but it does have a kind of glossy look to it, so maybe it was lacquered? i just don't know. Next on my list is an 1796 Draped Bust. I have been looking for one for a long time..........There is an eBAY seller who has them every now and then. I could go to Heritage, but i don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it. At the end i may not have a choice. I can wait a while. Well, once again, thank you all for your comments. Regards, Eduard
In case anyone is interested, I find the Large Cent reference books by Noyes to be superior to Sheldon, Breen and Newcomb. Well worth the $300 price tag for the two book set IMO.
Why am I not surprised. The 1796 draped bust cent is a lot rarer than people realize. It has three times the mintage of the 96 cap, and one tenth the availability.
Concerning buying large cents, would anyone be able to recommend any on-line or even eBay sellers specializing in this type of material? ideally a member of this forum. I know of Heritage and B&M. Also S.yancey. Just want an alternative and reliable option to obtain a representative sample for my collection. Nothing too fancy. As mentioned, i would like to purchase a 1796 Draped Bust. They are offered in eBAY not unfrequently, but given the perils of eBAY......... If anybody has any tips, you can PM me if you prefer. Thanks, Eduard
Here are a few EAC dealers specializing in large cents that I would recommend: Doug Bird: No website Chris Victor-McCawley: http://www.earlycents.com/ Craig Hamling: http://www.hcraig.com/catalog/ Tom Reynolds: http://www.eacs.org/ Shawn Yancey: http://earlycoppercoins.com/ Here are two dealers that don't specialize in them, but you can find nice copper in their inventory from time to time. One is a forum member here, and another is a forum member on the PCGS forums: http://www.markfeldcoins.com http://www.coinraritiesonline.com Hope this helps...Mike
Thank you VERY much Mike, those links are really useful. I have enough to look at now. have a good day! Eduard
