I saved this old time listing in my watch listing and thought that you may appreciate seeing a bogus 1896 S Barber quarter. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130175637546&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=003 Hint: If it had been good it would be in my collection today. It also would never have sold for 1/10th the value. Then, just for fun I checked some of his other sales, check out the mintmarks on the 1908 S and 1909 S Indians, links below. They both have a 'flipped up' top to the S which does not look like any S Indian that I have, or have ever seen. 1909 s: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130177788315 1908 S: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130177782521
How out of the loop do you have to be to consine someone to sell things for you on eBay?!! I hope you reported him...
The Barber Quarter screams...FAKE...FAKE...FAKE! Also, the "S" Mintmarks on the 1908 and 1909 Indian Cents appear to be from 1940's Lincolns that have been rotated when they were applied. Frank
Teach me, how can you tell that quarter is fake? The picture is way too blurry for me to make any kind of determination, and I'm anything but a Barber quarter expert....MIke
Listed as ONLY an 1896 - now why would that be? Possibly to get "cherry pickers" to see if it might be a 96S? Obverse pic is pretty clear, reverse blurry. Kinda makes you wonder now doesn't it?
Mike, All I can say is that I have had several Morgan Dollars that had the exact same appearance and were apparently made of the same composition as the 1896-S Quarter and they were counterfeits! Also, if you can blow-up the picture by 200%, you can see that some of the Lettering on "IN GOD WE TRUST"...especially the "N" in IN and the "S" in TRUST...don't look right. "LIBERTY" appears to have been re-tooled when it should show some wear as this is one of the first details on all of the Barber coins to suffer. The details also look too smooth and lack crisp...sharp edges, especially note the leaves in Liberty's Hairpiece. I can't note anything on the Reverse, as the picture is way too blurry to make any determination. Frank
Okay, as for the quarter-- compare it to a real Barber. the obverse looks cartoonish, no other description comes to mind. On the reverse, even tho blurry-- the mintmark is extremely large. Real '96 S mint marks are much smaller, and a different shape.
Every coin he has sold where you can still pull up the auction listing is a fake. I also like how the 1909-S lincolne he sold on Dec 1 and received positive fedback for is the same coin he sold on Dec 19th and also got positive fedback on.
