I googled it, and can only determine that it's pretty freakin rare and worth a little bit. How can I really tell the difference between it and a regular S? Here's 3 pictures: Front, Rear & zoomed in on the S. No flash was used, and the pictures haven't been enhanced, the coin is in REALLY good condition. The only post-processing was the zoom & crop. Sorry if the photos are large. If they're too big, I'll thumbnail or link!

BTW, I got this in my change at Subway!

Howdy Jeep - Welcome to the Forum !!

I'd say your correct with the attribution. I'd grade the coin at VF25, worth about $35 - $40. :thumb:

I've never heard of these before but I have a '44 with the same kind of S, grades around VF. Is there something to this kind of S, or is that just on the '43?

Well I have heard and read about this before. I have 2 1943S dimes but I'll be darned if I can determine
what type of S they have, even with a 10X loupe. To me, in your picture, the trumpet tail looks like an extra big blob at the end of the S.
Now I have another 2 coins set aside in the "future inspection" pile.

Whoa, is that it, the ends of the S, they look like the end of a, uh, trumpet? Boy, that's some imagination. Maybe mine doesn't qualify, after all. I thought these are just, you know, big fat Ss... :rolling:

    Hey all

I've just got other various coins that I got from my dad when he gave his collection to me. I'm doing an intro thread, so I'll list what all I have there. Thanks for the responses!

EDIT: I found on l&scoins.com, they are selling 3 1943-S trumpet tails ranging from $400-$700!

I would like to know the answer to the above question too. Isn't there anyone with the knowledge who could shed a little light on this? Is the trumpet S just found on the 1943 dimes?

It is just a different variety of the mint mark used in '43 - that's all. The S is just a different shape than that used on most other dimes minted in 1943. But has the same shape of S been used on other coins - of course.

    1943 trumpet tail

    Hi guys.
It's hard to tell if the picture is a trumpet tail but it certainly might be. Put it next to a regular 43 S. Trumpet tail looks 50% bigger.
under magnification the keys are a downward pointing upper serif and the trumpet bell shaped lower serif. This is very similar to the 41 S "Large mintmark", also referred to as Trumpet Tail. This is not a minor variation. Seen next to the standard small s mark it's a dramatic varient. This is one of Bill Fivas' (Cherry Pickers Guide) favorite varieties.
I'm new so I hope this post makes it.

oops I didn't see the magnified s before. I'm afraid this is not a trumpet tail altho the lower serif does appear a little large. Do the size comparison with a regular S. Just to brag I've got a PCGS certified MS66 FSB Trumpet tail that was certified by Coneca about 2 years ago. May be the finest known!

I'm not set up for photo's right now. If you're really interested, volume 2 of the forth edition of "The Cherry Picker's Guide" by Fivas/Stanton has come out after a long wait. It covers Mercs and has fantastic pics. Between volumes 1 & 2 you can research any U.S. coin variety. You can get them on Amazon. PCGS and NGC will now certify and slab varieties by FS (Fivas/Stanton) numbers from these books. Also great if you're thinking about Ebay shopping for something like a 42/41. There is no substitute for knowing what they really look like.
Just for fun, a friend and I bought most of the 43-s's on Ebay for about a year. He bought 2 that had great RED toning, obviously from the same roll. Both were Trumpet Tails. We couldn't run down the rest of the roll so they are still out there.

Well since the OP I have been doing some research on the 1941 and 1943 trumpet tail dimes. And here is what I have so far:
In the 1941 dime, the trumpet tail S variety is only found on the large S. And on the 1943 it is just the opposite with the trumpet tail found only on the small S variety. If someone thinks this info is not correct please speak up. Thanks and happy hunting.
