    Odoacer can be ruled out because, as a non-Roman Germanic warlord, he would never have dared to have himself depicted with the imperial diadem; all coins depicting him are bare-headed. It would have been suicide to have declared himself (a "barbarian") emperor and equal to the Eastern Roman emperor; the imperial court in Constantinople would have spewed fire and called for Odoacer's head.
