I bought this collection housed in a Capital Plastics holder about a year ago and just got around to imaging the coins tonight. I had forgotten how nice these coins are, each one has absolutely blazing luster and many have incredible pastel toning. Some of the coins look like they need an acetone bath but I didn't notice until I looked at the photos. Before I submit some/all of these coins to NGC for grading, I thought it might be fun to give you guys a chance to predict the grades of the coins. Here are the individual photos for each date/mm. 1942-P 1942-S 1943-P 1943-D 1943-S 1944-P 1944-D 1944-S 1945-P 1945-D 1945-S As always, comments welcome! These are my grades: 1942-P: MS66 1942-S: MS67 1943-P: MS67 5FS 1943-D: MS65 6FS 1943-S: MS67* 1944-P: MS66 1944-D: MS66 1944-S: MS66+* 1945-P: MS65 1945-D: MS67 1945-S: MS66+*
Funny thing I've been thinking of building a set myself. I've always liked them, even built a set or two over the years.
I am horrible at grading Jefferson's so I'll forego the opportunity to guess a grade. Just wanted to comment that this is one beautifully matched set. I love it and rather hope you keep the set together.
Did you choose all the coins to have a light yellow tone or is it just the holder toning them all the same color?
Yeah, my cat thought he could keep his "set together" too, but that didn't quite work out for him. Hey Lehigh, is the Glamor Shots franchise still in business, and do they have a coin division? My favorite Capital holder is the Buffalo short set - 1934 to 1938-D. The trick is finding a 1934-D as nice as the rest of the set.
Nice set! I'll go first on guessing the grades, even though I'm pretty bad at grading this series. 1942-P MS-64FS 1942-S MS-64FS 1943-P MS-64FS 1943-D MS-65FS 1943-S MS-65FS 1944-P MS-64 1944-D MS-64FS 1944-S MS-64 1945-P MS-64FS 1945-D MS-65 1945-S MS-64
The photos are a little hard to see the fine details in the steps. If I had a guess only 3 possibly 4 have FS.
1942-P nope 1942-S possibly, after acetone removes the green crud 1943-P FS 1943-D Possibly FS 1943-S nope 1944-P nope 1944-D nope 1944-S nope 1945-P nope 1945-D nope 1945-S nope Just my opinion
My 2 cents 42P 66 42S 66 5FS acetone rinse 43P 65 5FS 43D 65 5FS questionable 6FS acetone rinse 43S 66 44P 65 44D 65 Questionable 5FS 44S 65 45P 64 45D 66 acetone rinse 45S 64
Can't find the member who posted this some time ago to give credit, but this is a valuable aid when determining FS.
I'm at 3 with full steps: 42-S, 43-P, & 43-D. My photos are good but they really don't do the luster on these coins justice. The S mint coins are absolutely booming with outstanding pastel color. I'm rather hoping that the luster carries some of these coins to full grade bumps, + grades, * star grades, or any combination of the three. A few of these coins are not going to make the final cut and will not be submitted to NGC
That was pretty random cat abuse if ya ask me. Nice set. I also would like to see the holder with coins in it.
Hey, he remained fully "nadded" longer than most people would allow. He just recently got "de-nadded".
I bought them this way, the paper insert of the holder is the cause of the toning. Thank you! I have never learned how to take photos of multiple coins at once, I can never get enough light on all the surfaces.
