Denver only made these (1982 small date) in zinc, 2.5 grams. Worth .01 cent. They made 17 billion cents in 1982, Philly and Denver, Large Date and Small Date, copper and zinc. One single 1982-D small date copper has been found in 36 years. Maybe another will turn up one day. Yours would need be copper and weigh 3.1 grams to be the 2nd ever found. The 1982 small date Philly (no mint mark) in copper or zinc has a little value in mint state. (Brand new looking).
Someone did ask an interesting question yesterday about how many off metal coins there are. I don't think there is a definitive list. 1943 copper 26 (please feel free to correct any of this, or add to it.) 1944 steel 39 1982-D small date copper 1 and it gets sketchy. There is a 1983 Philly (thanks Paddy) and a 1983-D on copper. There are some other dates but the listings are sporadic. 1989 (D?) and one from the 90's, as well as others. Please add any information. I agree with Fred W. about the 1983 being a bargain. When you compare the rarity with the 43 and 44 and the prices. I also agree than not many more will come to market in the next few years. I was just saying what if. Sometimes a cache or hoard is discovered and the population increases.
I have 3, 1982 D pennies weighing at 3.1 exactly. I “think” one of them is a small date, idk though I’m driving myself insane with this stuff!! Should I post a picture? Help anyone?
And then of course there are a number of off silver coins. I don't know of any list/count/mintage. 1965 quarters struck on silver. And at least 1 1966. 1965 dimes on silver. 1946 nickels on war nickel blanks. And I believe a war nickel was struck on a regular nickel planchet. I think there are some Kennedy halves. A 40% that was struck as a 90%, and some clads that were struck as 40%.
