It got my attention pretty quickly! It stuck right out to me in a dealers case at a show a few weeks ago. I didn’t purchase it at the show just because it was too expensive for me - more than 3x the most expensive coin I’ve ever purchased. Couldn’t stop thinking about the coin and luckily the dealer gave me his card. I kept looking at it on the dealers website every day after the show. Finally decided I needed the coin in my collection!
Yeah I've done the same thing myself....and also lost a few by waiting....6 months ago a buffalo nickel in a segs slab that was like a beacon in the case I though the dealer was holding it, my next trip back to his table it was gone! But sometimes you just know you got to have it...no matter the cost you find a way. Nice pick up
That’s an outstanding coin, can’t wait to see more images of it. Civil War dates are a nice added bonus for the investment as well IMO. That will never be an overlooked or uninteresting era of US history.
Here's a few that arrived in the mail recently. I'm surprised this one only got a green CAC. This Buffalo is absolutely stunning in hand. I paid up for it and it was worth every cent. I may try to see if CAC will reconsider for a gold CAC. Another one that I am a sucker for. NGC gen 3 common date Mercury Dime, but she is a real beauty... And this one, an 1879-S Morgan with super bright semi-PL fields in a NGC 66 holder. The reverse is a headlight with some really cool die polish lines. It's also a VAM-106. It's an earlier die state to the VAM-107 I picked up the other day. This one has a different reverse though, hence the 106 designation.
All amazing pickups! You have to do a thread sometime showing all your 38-Ds with all the different holders
I broke down and got this 1939 Mercury proof. I might have to revisit the photography a few times to show the toning, without having it obliterated by reflections from the holder. The angle that shows the reflective fields is the same angle that reflects the lights off the slab.
I have no idea how many I have right now. I blame @Paddy54 for my addiction. One thing I am thankful for is that they are inexpensive.
Couple of my State show pick ups here in Michigan. The 77-S/S looks PL. 25C is NGC, Lincoln’s are PCGS
Oh I know.... It was more like a crack dealer. "Hey check this out, your really going to like this, trust me...." "Best part, is it's cheap and you can get it anywhere."
I'm a sucker for Key Mercs with fully original skin....... This (almost) matches my dark 1921 P, just not quite enough glossy blackness in the fields.
WOW! Three amazing coins. I would send that merc to cac as it looks like a lock for a green bean. I’m wondering if the buffalo didn’t get a gold because that is such a common date in gem+ grades??
well, if you have a DSLR, try and get the halo over the entire coin and make it look kinda washed out, as far as color. I usually do a click or two under exposed and just do a color adjustment in photoshop. Usually works pretty well to get the in hand look
Ok so this is like a game....I got it ....New game and new addiction to blame Paddy for...so Paddy sez ..... Paddy sez Jtlee321 take a cold water enema Best part it's cheap and you can get it anywhere..... heck the neighbors garden hose.... Ok ready for round two? Paddy sez.... @jtlee321.
Well, that's thinking outside the box - go ahead and let it reflect, and just shoot through it. Very intriguing idea! This is Step 1. Would you be interested in seeing if you can fix it up? I am going to try some things on my end. (Of course, I can always fix the slab problem with my trusty hacksaw!)
That alone should not preclude a gold CAC. I did notice a little bit of disturbance near the Indian's eye that may have prevented the gold CAC. Otherwise the luster and eye appeal on this '38-D are fantastic and the strike is pretty decent.
