I agree and disagree at the same time. Are there opportunities at major shows absolutely no arguments there.

That said I do think that a lot of shows are more dangerous for someone new or trusting than helpful and that just a lot of the small local shows are very overrated to begin with.

More the local or regional type show circuit it where they really need to be on their toes if they're buying raw but it can happen anywhere. A lot of details coins end up raw again at those types of shows, at least in my area and I do fully understand where you are will make a difference. That said a lot just don't know either but at least they enjoyed their time there.

There certainly are a couple good people at even those shows and I will go right to them every-time, there's also a large portion of the room I wouldn't even bother to glance at though

What you are looking for matters too. A lot of shows are a complete waste of time if you are a modern collectors or world collector ect in many areas. There's no one right or wrong answer just general trends that can be reported on. What works for someone doesn't necessarily work for another.

The trash talk or being rude doesn't even bother me so much. By all means be rude to me if you are going to give me a great price. It's the over the top polite ones I am more skeptical of as you can only see so many cracked out details coins and over hear so much bad advice before you just get cynical.

Completely agree here. So much of social media sites is just people putting on a front that their life is so great to keep up the appearance which causes people to get jealous and sad ect. I barely use one of them from how bad they try and manipulate things including the news.

I think you owe major shows a fresh look. I pick up “missing moderns” regularly. Dave Harper of Krause always remarks how strong moderns are, and he’s correct. No, you won’t see them at Laura Sperber’s table, and you may need to check the sides and back, but they are there.

 

I problem should, I just have an opposition to traveling for them and really try and avoid the city of Baltimore as much as possible. Probably wouldn't help anyway as I would just get distracted by the eye candy that I can never afford lol

That’s likely from a PCI holder. Those holders were known to cause toning and are one of the main sources of MA Silver Eagles.

Ah yes. I forgot PCI holders were a thing. The color is exactly right for having been in a PCI holder.

The dealer wants $600 for it, which is about $570 too much, or maybe $550 if you really want a 1996.

 

The premiums on these have gone up quite a bit lately. I find that example attractive and would pay in the $100-$150 range (which would not get it in most cases). Realistically I could see it going in the $200-$300 range if auctioned (unless some people go crazy in bidding). At $600, I agree the price is optimistic.

 

@TypeCoin971793 I used to own a PCI imitation toned Eagle. I bought it cheap (already in the Anacs holder) and resold it for not much more. I should have probably kept that one as it looked cool despite being AT.

 

C'mon man, that is a hot take to say that a rainbow toned ASE is going to sell for $30 and completely unrealistic.

I bought 6 of these still in the PCI holders back in 2012 for $100 each. I sold 5 of the 6 for $125-$150 in 2014. I haven't paid attention to the market for these since then but I think $200 sounds about right, $300 is optimistic, and $600 should come with a free shovel.

It is also worth mentioning that all of the ones I owned had a much more pastel coloring rather than this very orange toning that TypeCoin showed, though I have seen that same orange peripheral toning on Morgan Dollars as well. Here is an example of one of my PCI ASEs.

 

I think it’s ugly and would not pay much more than melt for it. Plus it’s just bullion that was stored in a poor-quality holder. If someone wants to waste more money on it, then they are completely within their rights to do so.

 

That's fine if you personally wouldn't pay a premium for it, but to pretend that nobody would pay a premium and define it's market value on what you would pay is just silly.

 

@Insider , you once worked for PCI... what chemicals in the gasket caused this? The holders have an odd smell to them.

 

The market cares very little what I think of toned coins. If the market values them more highly than I do, and more highly than the seller in front of me, I'm not so stubborn as to pass up the opportunity.

 

Who knows? I think it was the paper insert as I have seen them turn brown around the edges.

I saw the inserts being made. They just dropped bags of plastic beads into the top of the machine. Makes more sense that it was the insert as the toning has a target shape.

 

Hmm. But the gasket smells stronger of that chemical smell than the paper, IMO.
