  3. Not seen this one before, but his username puts me off right away! Only been a member since Jan too. Not saying that's bad, just be wary maybe?

Those look OK, I mean authentic. But as always, be wary with ebay stuff.

Know the seller or know the coin.

If you can’t tell, buy from seller’s you can trust. You will save yourself so much time, money and worry in the end...

He's sold a lot of items with a 100% satisfaction rating - his buyers seem pleased & he includes bonus coins - my kind of eBay seller ;) - your call, though

I just did a series of posts on this topic, but let’s step through this seller as an example of how to evaluate an eBay seller:

Check feedback as ancient coin seller. Only 78 of the 492 positive feedbacks are as seller. Some of those are from US/world coins, so this seller actually has fewer than 70 positive reviews.

    Who gave those reviews?

a***r = a***e = e**i. 22 of this bidder’s 30 items in the last month are from this seller. Either this bidder loves this seller, or this is a shill account. I’d ignore this bidder’s feedback. Note also the frequent name changes. Without digging any deeper this seller only has 50 positive feedbacks as an ancient coin seller.

I’d be done with this seller right here, but let’s keep going.

Check recent sale feedback. Item 263997834680 was won by none other than a***r. He was up against:

k***a bid on 3 items in the past 30 days, all from this seller.
l***u bid on 1 item in the past 30 days, from this seller.
o**3 bids on Dolls and Bears. Only coin bid on was this seller’s. Hmmm.
h**i bid on 3 items in the past 30 days, 1 or 2 from this seller (I didn’t bother checking which)

That auction was almost exclusively between buyers who only bid on a few items in the past 30 days, and all just so happen to be from this seller. That’s some amazing customer base he has there. Plus the bidder name changes. Bad sign.

Photos not useful for identifying fakes. Bad sign.

Coins for sale - the Drachma Of Alexander The Great is a fourree, and not described as such. The base metal core is visible even in the crappy photo. Bad sign.

Coins for sale - The Julia Paula looks like a cast? Can’t tell due to photo quality. Bad sign.

    No returns. Bad sign.

That’s enough. Even a cursory look screams AVOID!

Carausius Brother, can you spare a sestertius?

@Silverlock eBay seller reviews shouldn't be necessary. Someone that needs to ask "has anyone bought fakes from this guy?" shouldn't be buying ancient coins on ebay. Period. Buy from specialist, ancient coin sellers with lifetime guarantees, until you become more knowledgeable.

What I don't get is in a world with @Ken Dorney and @Valentinian and many other collectors and dealers on here freely contributing knowledge and experience; David Connors and Incitatus and AncientImports and many others selling inexpensive real coins; Forvm hosting discussion boards and fake reports and giving a free history lesson with each coin; and literally hundreds of quality eBay sellers from VCoins and MA-Shop storefronts, collectors and dealers from this forum, and so forth, why anyone would prefer to give their money instead to a seller they have to ask about for fear of getting ripped off? Rather than support the people who make our hobby great, I'm going to give my money to dodgy sellers and worry about everything I buy. Yea, OK. With that, I've said my last on the subject of fake coins.
