When I was searching for an XF/AU type 1 seated half for my type set, I noticed that NGC would assign a details grade that was one level above the actual level of wear on the coin. For example, a coin with VF-30 details would grade XF details, or a coin with XF-40 details would grade AU details. They were pretty consistent about that for seated halves a few years ago. I’m seeing less of it now. PCGS didn’t do this. It was exclusively NGC.
Because, as you said, the TPGs are lenient with classic US coins. And the pictures were taken with a poorly-lit scanner, so the colors seen in the picture are not the ones seen in-hand. People assuming that the color is exactly like the scans will be led to believe that they are original grey surfaces.
Hate to disappoint you but these images were taken with a Nikon, not a scanner. And I will freely admit that my photographic skills need much improvement.
NGC didn’t use photos to evaluate the color. They saw the coin in hand. My point is that Larry is an experienced collector who knows how to grade coins, and he disagrees with you. That in combination with the assigned straight grade should give you pause.
Our approaches to discussing a grade are fundamentally different. I use the coin and take various attributes to justify why I give my grade. You only depend on who said what about a coin. So, basically, I grade the coin, you grade the holder. No wonder why we disagree so much.
To be honest, I thought they were scans from NGC. I stand corrected. How are you approaching your lighting?
Maybe the question I should have asked is this: when experienced collectors disagree with each other and with TPG’s on whether a coin is cleaned, what is the new guy supposed to think?
I guess decide whether or not you want to blindly trust the TPGs or learn how to grade on your own. Most collectors choose the former, less choose the latter. Ultimately it’s your choice.
From your post on this site, I get the feeling that you hate this hobby and only come here to start fights. If not that, you have much to learn. There is enough negative, made up stuff posted here already. It's clear you understand very little about grading or this hobby. Give us all a break and post something positive for a change.
Take a look at the hairlines and "washed out" appearance in the right and left field of the obverse, LeHigh. Still think it wasn't cleaned?
