Has anyone noticed a large number of 2003 Sac dollar in circulation? I routinely buy mixed small dollar rolls for spending cash and have found quite a bit. They show up more then the 2001 sac dollars. Someone must have been breaking mint sets for state quarters. Some of them are quite worn. Any one else notice this?
Possibly, but it is more likely it was people who bought bags or rolls of the coins, searched for possible gems and spent the rest.
yeah . i was thinking that also. probably someone who bought a 500 or 1000 dollar bag from the mint and cherrypicked it and spent the rest. i never seen any 2003 over here in NYS. I like to look thru them for the Cheerios Sac but never found any yet. i'm not sure what was offered at the mint back in 2003. 500 dollar or 1000 dollar bag but sure is alot to look thru at the premium price they charge. i always wonder what happens to the coins that the mint doesnt sell like the 2003 Sacagawea's. The mint probably had some left over - does anyone know if they destroy them or dump them in circulation at face.
It could be that 2003s were dumped on one FRB bank. Maybe a bag searcher. I forgot about the bags. I just honestly see an inordinate amount of them compared to their mintage. I think the mint sells things until they sell out. I could be wrong...
I think it's likely that someone in your area has been searching a bag purchased from the Mint or just decided not to save them anymore... it could happen. I intentionally place rejected Kennedy half dollars into circulation each year after saving one of each mintmark for my collection, plus any other in decent condition... probably what's happening somewhere near wherever you're getting those. I've yet to find any Sacagaweas in circulation other than 2000 and 2001's. Have found some Kennedy halves when I searched boxes of halves that were post 2001 that weren't ever made for circulation. The Mint is still selling 2001 Kennedy rolls and bags btw... (they had many surplus that were originally intended for circulation that they're still trying to sell off to collectors.) Not sure about the Sacagaweas... as far as I know they only mint as many as they expect to sell until the year's over, so usually don't have surplus anyway. But since the president dollars have been minted, legislation requires them to mint a Sacagawea for every 2 presidential dollars minted, so starting 2007 they may have ended up with unsold ones at the end of the year. No idea what they'll do with them all, whether they'll try to keep selling them, melt them down, or just stick in the vault... banks aren't likely to order any (to the degree anyone needs small dollars the SBAs and 2000-2001 Sacagaweas are enough for current needs, mainly vending machines and ticket machines. Be awhile before anyone decides they need any more...). Myabe they'll try to sell them off, or maybe they'll be in the vault for years (like the Morgans, until the 60's...). Anyone know for sure?
I believe (could be wrong) that the new dollar legislation passed at the end of the year changed the rule for that - I am not sure they needed to mint the Sacs ealtive to the Prez $ afterall.
Haven't noticed. But, I've yet to encounter a single Sac dollar in circulation yet. I buy rolls of them once in a while and spend them around town just to see if they circulate around, but I've never gotten one back in change yet. I wonder where they all go? This is a small town. Guy~
Where I live, the only places that i've seen them are at the local Arcade and the Post Office Vending Machines. I've tried to spend them on occasion, but Honolulu folks are extremely hostile to them it seems....
