    QC.

Add me to the queue for posting one when the time comes can tag me. Have one I bought recently that I'm curious to hear opinions about since it's not a series I know much about (Washington 25C). It caught my eye and passed my test (which is all that matters to me I have my own MA standards which I think everyone should have) but curious to hear from Washie collectors on it.

I have ONLY seen toning like this on coins that have been stored with other coins in those old glass mason jars, tucked away on the shelves of those old antique china cabinets. The only reason I say this is because my grandfather had multiple jars full of change put away like that. ( Under lock and key ) From Half dollars to Lincoln Cents. The newest coin I was able to find was no older than 1994. Going through some of these coins, I've noticed this color before, maybe not as dark though. I am going by memory. It's been years since I've been able to coin hunt in all those mason jars.

1000% Artificial. Not even a remotely good con job on this one.

2002 quarter: I don’t like the colors at all. I believe proof coins in the modern era do tone like that in their OGP, though.
Still going to say AT just because that is the exact look you get from cooking coins.

I agree, and far more often than most think.

But could it have been duplicated/be AT ? Of course.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

You have to remember that so-called "True"Views present an oversaturated, red-shifted caricature of a coin. They are especially bad for toned proofs like this.

I'll bet if a reasonable person took a picture of it, it would look very different. In hand, it may even look quite natural.

However, all I have to go off are those pics - and they indicate QT to me.

Pictures is all we really have to judge by, so that is what we use.
I've seen some videos of similar toned State Quarters and they looked just as bad.

@IBetASilverDollar go ahead and post that Quarter!

I'll vote NT on that. The obverse has an less common appearance, but is consistent with what I have seen from some types of holders. The colors look right. The reverse has a solid natural appearance.

That one looks fine to me. Nothing really makes me question it.

    I say NT.

I have seen a lot of toned Washington Quarters. That one looks very natural to me. They are certainly a different animal when it comes to toning.

I’m not even gonna add the second set of letters, that’s how strongly I think this coin is:

Jason isn’t criticizing photos, he is criticizing TruViews, and his criticisms mirror my own.

Here’s my olive branch. After only a few coins, I’m willing to admit that there are more modern AT coins in straight graded slabs than I thought if you are willing to admit that TruViews do not accurately reflect the actual appearance of a coin.

It appears that I’ve had tunnel vision. Since I don’t see many AT coins in the series that I’ve collected, I assumed that the TPGs were just as diligent across the board. That last State Quarter has me thinking they have interns and Stevie Wonder grading moderns.
