Hallo All. I intend to send it to NGC or PCGS to evaluation and grading. I just don't know if worth do it. I'll send only if you experts tell me that the grade is good enough. I took a loooot of pictures and only these two was good enough to post. Thanks in advance.
XF details, cleaned. See the hairlines all over it, like little scratches running in the same direction? That means it has been harshly cleaned.
Check out the PCGS price guide for an XF of that date, slash the price by 60%-80%, and then see if it’s woeth the grading cost then
Thank you @C-B-D for grade her and you @hotwheelsearl for have convinced me that I shall not to send her to evaluation. But, as far as I can see, only the obverse was cleaned. Do you think the same? This fact don't change the grade, obviously. But, if I'm right, why somebody clean only one side of the coin?
Both sides have been cleaned, someone didn't care for the old album toning. And tried to remove it....you see this quite often in half dimes and dimes.
Which is a shame, because other than a couple rim dings that's a pretty nice dime. I never realized how muscular Lady Liberty's right arm is before...
I agree with XF details/cleaned. It has issues, as mentioned, and I don't think it would really be worth the expense of grading, but despite the cleaning and hairlines, it has some decent detail and is not wholly unattractive. Here's mine. Normally I don't go for coins with mottled toning like this (I'm more into evenly-distributed pastels), but this one does have nice colors, and the iridescent blues "pop" more when seen in hand. Your coin may have once had toning similar to this, which someone decided to remove, and did so just a bit too roughly. (PCGS AU53)
It was scrubbed a bit too hard, but the hairlines just show up more on the obverse, is all. The reverse is actually not too bad looking, with that secondary grey retoning.
I guess you're right about cleanning on both sides, but on naked eyes, the reverse is almost perfect. This was made me believe on cleannig in only on the obverse. Your accurated eagle's eyes could see more than ordinary people's eyes can see.
It takes a while to develop a good sense for cleaned coins, sometimes, and detecting artificial or secondary toning. I still can't say I'm perfect at either thing, really, even after 42 years in the hobby.
The obverse of the OP coin looks to have had more done than just a cleaning. The arms, legs and chest were buffed. Probably to smooth out some hits or pitting.
Oh!! Then we have the same age. My 11th birthday were at 1976 too. more precisely 07-14. But I am only 4 months old on collecting coins. Just a baby.
Won’t erase the scratches, though. Am I the only one who doesn’t think it’s no better than some flavor of VF, esp. in view of the degree of wear on the reverse? (Perfectly willing to admit that my ideas of grade were formed, shall we say, some years ago.) D.
You are five months and two weeks older than I am, then. I just got a much longer head start on you with the hobby. Great hobby, though- it's never too late to start collecting.
