Please help identify this denarius (3.23g, 19mm) that seems to belong to the Roman Provincial coinage.

    Thank you.

I had never been to your site, Pete, but just spent a solid 30 minutes and have only scratched the surface. Great collection of coins! And a warm welcome to you!

For the record: I have enjoyed the friendship of PeteB since what seems like the beginning of time but actually only dates to when we were both members of the Ancient Numismatic Society of Washington before either of us had retired and begun life as we now know it. Most of Pete's coins are much nicer than mine partly because I bought most of the ones I could afford back when I saw him at coins shows neither of us live as close to as we did then. I still have 91 coins in my catalog listing him as the source but I suspect there were a few that came from the earlier days when I only listed ANSW as coins from the club meetings.

I recommend you treat him like the expert he is. I have learned a lot from him over the years. Welcome to CT!

The coin dates to a time when fewer ancients on the market looked like they were scrubbed yesterday.

To Doug: thanks for the kind words, old friend. Yes, we met in the mid-70s, as I recollect. You taught me many, many things over these last 40+ years, for which I remain deeply in your debt. This CoinTalk group is blessed by your presence and contributions.
To Jorge: you are very welcome!

Hello Pete. A warm welcome to you. In the spirit of full disclosure I have bought a coin from Pete. He is great to deal with, a real gentleman.

Here is the coin I purchased from him. This coin is not currently in RIC. It will be published in the first issue of KOINON. I hear this type will be published in the addendum to RIC II Part 1.

    Domitian. AR denarius
    (16.88 mm 3.02 g,). Rome mint, struck A.D. 81.
Obv: IMP CAESAR DOMITIANVS AVG, laureate head right
Rev: TR P COS VII, draped throne, back decorated with grain ears Lituus beneath
    the frame.
    RIC 3 Var;; RSC 554a.
Ex: Akropolis Ancient Coins June 22, 2017.
