1880? Nickel

    You REALLY need a "Red Book" (A Guide Book Of United States Coins). The shield nickels were made from 1866-1883. Yours could be 1868 or 1888, it is so worn it is hard to tell. With the date that hard to read, the grade would probably be P (Poor).

    Thank you. I looked at the book wrong. I believe now that it is 1880.

    Looks like an 1868 to me. The third number looks like a six to me.

    I guess thats possible. Ive been looking at so many coins here lately, things do get kinda blurry, but it sure is fun and exciting. I should have been doing this years ago.

    Yes it's 186-something IMO which were common dates for this series.
    A clear photo normal size with correct lighting will show more than these blow up shots.

    Correct you can tell by the reverse...there were 4 reverses for the series. With some research one can identify the date by the reverse.

    Wish I could say I was up to speed on all that. I knew there were reverse varieties, but not much about the diagnostics.

    I just squinted at the picture. ;)

    The star under "Of" placement of said star plus the left upper point in broken.
    Reverse hub l is with rays , reverse hub 'll the top point splits the word of, And the left point is broken. However thats the easy way to id there are other star alinement.
