35 years ago my friend showed me his Silver Rounds collection . I became intrigued by the Designs and visited my first coin store . I'm collecting 19th Century Silver & Gold coins . I especially like Liberty Head Gold pieces and Seated Liberty & Capped Bust Silver coins & their Eagle reverse . I like to collect Raw circulated coins . I even collect Holed , ex-Jewelry coins because they have value in their individual history . I'm more of an accumulator I guess , I don't have sets , certified or Investment coins in my collection . My Daughter will receive it One Day maybe inspiring a new Numismatic Nut , I can't part with it .
Three events conspired to cement my interest in coins at a very young age: 1) On my parents' bedroom dresser, there was a small plastic box that contained coins and currency my father brought home from the Pacific theater in World War II, along with some coins my uncle brought home from Europe at the same time. Around age 5 or 6, I was allowed to explore the contents of this box, and I think that explains my lifelong interest in world coins (I still have most of them). Seeing those coins sent me to the family encyclopedias to research the countries of origin. 2) Around age 7 or 8, the aforementioned uncle gave me two Morgan dollars (which I still have). They were big, shiny and very cool! 3) Around age 9 or 10, a much older cousin showed me his coin collection, which consisted mostly of Whitman cent, nickel, dime and quarter folders. After all of the above, I was hooked for life.
I have told this before. When in the Boy Scouts. We went on a camping trip, next to a large creek. There was a rock cut in it large enough to have like a slide in it. So, we started removing rocks, and stuff out of it for safety. Then first I found a Stone Mountain half. We found many more and others coins. What really got my attention was 1875s 20 cent coin. That started me on my love of collecting coins. That was about 1954/1955. I still find and collect today. My kids care nothing about them or my other hobbies.
