Found the coin in the pics in a roll, which was part of my wife's uncle's estate. And no we don't get the coins :(, but I do get to go through and catalog them, which has been fun.

Simplest explanation is a punch was used on it. But how about target practice or something else?

round ... ball bearing-ish indentation with the opposite push on the opposite side.
    Target price sounds pretty accurate.

BUT, even with the damage, it's still worth 50 cents.

BB Gun, used many halves as target practice in the basement as a kid.

Move the decimal one space over to the right and that should be it’s price (with such damage). Sad that someone ruined a silver coin like that. Clad halves unavailable?

I would be willing to bet the damage was done when this coin was a fairly new release.

Yes, just about like I said. 0.50, decimal space to the right, $5.0.

Newest coin in the roll was a 1965 Kennedy; oldest was a 1943 Walker. Pretty sure the uncle put the roll away in late 60's or early 70's. The coin pictured in first post was the only one with obvious damage. Remainder ranged from VF to MS64 or better; no real rarities.

Are you auctioning off the coins, or did you offer to purchase the roll?

This was the only roll of halves. There were rolls of Morgan and Peace dollars, Roosevelt dimes, and Washington quarters. The coins belong to the uncle's sons (my wife's cousins); I'm just helping them. Yes, they want to sell. I don't collect any of these series except CC Morgans (there were none of these). The options appear to be eBay or dealers. I don't want to sell them on my eBay account, and the cousins aren't interested in doing it themselves. Chances are they will be carried to a Long Beach show and sold to dealers there. A few were sent to PCGS with variable results. These may go to an auction house.
