That would leave you short. Did you toss in a dime to replace that or just leave it and add seven cents?
I was a toll taker for two summers. 74 and 75. I dont really remember getting anything really earth shaking, I still have a crisp 5 silver cert a guy pulled from a book one early am...his only money and he knew it was special. So I promised him Id keep it for him if he came back well Ive had it since 75 and he hasnt came back yet! One fellow got a 2.50 indian gold one day, he found it at the end of the day when the change counter rejected it. One old timer had been saving silver halves since he started on the road. When I left he had two 5 gallon buckets full of them. I often wonder if he cashed out during the hunt bros boom.
Got an 1897 Indian Cent when I was working at a truck stop. Best find was a 1911-S Lincoln in F when I was working as a cashier in college.
In 1994 I got all of these out of the cash register at work along with about 25 silver Roosies: The top left is an 1865 three cent nickel
Thanks Treashunt. It's a story I've told here before. I was working in a hardware store while I was in grad school. One day I went to lunch at 12:00 and came back to cover the cash register for an hour at 1:00. The first time the register opened I heard that silver "jingle" that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. I could see the dime slot was full of silver. I took everything out and showed my boss. Some kid had come in while I was gone and exchanged a roll of dimes for $5. No one had ever seen him before so no way to track him down. My boss couldn't have cared less, so he sold me everything at face- $3.70, but he did charge me 10¢ for the 3¢ nickel. It is by far and away my best find ever. I still wonder what was in the 13 coins that got away!
the oldest coin i got from circulation is a 1938 jefferson nickel out of a bank roll. thats awsome about those silver dimes!
Lets see here.. As far as Cents, a 1919 Wheatie Nickels, 1935-S Buffalo and for Dimes a nice 1957 Roosevelt. Nothing older than 1965 for quarters...
Many, many coins from the 1800's such as Sitting Liberty Head Dimes, Standing Liberty Quarters, 20 Cent pieces, etc. Of course you did not specify WHEN in circulation. Since I started collecting in or about 1943, all such coins were commonly in change. It was rarer to find a Roosevelt Dime back then.
Oldest coin I ever found in circulation would have been a 1927 wheat cent. Oldest non-US coin I ever found was a Canadian cent from 1929. Wheat cents are not too uncommon find, maybe get a couple a week, where I work. Where I used to work (Sam's Club) would find a lot of silver Roosevelt dimes... once a Mercury dime and a buffalo nickel.
