I like to collect US Mint bags as per one of my older threads. Although my newest doesnt appear to be from a mint I dont think. It is blank on both sides and shows outlines of large sized dollar coins. I would assume silver dollars but no date is shown on the very cool tag from the Assistant Treasurer in New Orleans. It measures 20"x12". Enjoy This is some sort of lead clamp holding the strings together under the tag.
On the tag I can make out FROM ASSISTANT TREASURER NEW ORLEANS, LA $1,000 STANDARDS SUPT US MINT PHILADELPHIA CHARGES PA is there anything else visible? This would indicate the bag was shipped from the New Orleans Mint to the Philadelphia Mint. (Standards indicates they were standard dollars not gold or trade dollars) Probably during the period of the dollar melting of the Pitman Act. Most of the melting was done at Philadelphia, New York or San Francisco. new Orleans had seased operating as a Mint in 1909 and in 1918 it was just used for storage and as an assay office. They would not have had the facilities for melting down coins there. There are some details on the lead seal but I can't make them out.
What you see on the tag is all that is visible. The lead seal has some numbers on it like an ID and a logo i think, but it is very hard to make out. Very good info, never thought about this bag being related to the pitman act. Makes a lot of sense.
