I've been coin hunting for about 6 to 8 months and most coins I've been able to find some general information about. However there are a few I haven't been able to get much or any info on. I'm not sure if I should post all in one thread or start a new one for each so I'll just start with one and see how that goes. First I have a 1985 D penny. I know 85 was the first year of the larger d but mine appears to have both the small and large d. I was just wondering if someone else has seen something similar since I haven't been able to find anything online. Any help is appreciated.
There is no such thing as a small D inside of the normal D Mint Mark. Your Cent is a copper plated zinc planchet. What you are seeing is a plating issue. A plating bubble.
Welcome to CoinTalk. Since the switch to copper plated zinc in 1982, it is hard to tell what should be considered "mint errors" and "plating errors". I think this is a plating error.
Thank you for your input. I also have this blank that weighs 5.32 grams any ideas or an 83 p eagle that actually looks like its spitting not just the neck of Washington.
