I have this seated dime and I believe it may be the large o variety. Can someone help me verify. Also with grading and value?
From the pictures in Brian Greer’s book on LS dimes it rather does look like the Large O variety, rather than what he calls the “Huge O” (which is what I’ll bet you are hoping it is and which is, according to him, indeed quite scarce). I think many would grade it a weak aG, the more conservative rating it only FR-2, or 2.5. D.
How many varieties are there? I thought there were only 2. One being the small o on the 1839, and the large o which is the reverse of the 1838.
No, there are actually 3. The small O and various iterations of the large O are all relatively common. However, the “huge O” is very scarce. This was first identified in Brian Greer’s “The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Dimes”, published some years ago and now very much out of print. Fortunately, an update and expansion has recently been published by Gerry Fortin, a well-known dealer and Liberty Seated enthusiast. Even more fortunately, Gerry has put the whole thing on line and you can access it at his web site: gerryfortinrarecoins.com. Just keep plowing through until you get his mint mark and variety section. It’s got more details on the series than I imagined it possible to know. Hope this helps, D.
