okay, so some of my coin collection the Dealers here would never touch. They're not the high profit flipping variety. I'm just after examples of history (and not fake) that I enjoy the designs of. In this case we have the Draped Bust of a Dollar, Half Dollar, Quarter and Half Cent (no eagle, but it's cool to have Half a Cent). Yes, I'm after a Dime, Half Dime, Cent too. I started enjoying the design of not the Obverse, but the Reverse and only after I obtained some Coronet Head Double Eagles, which are similar (to me) in design. I also enjoy the historical time frame of these coins as they are closer to the birth of Independence of the US. But if you've ever read some of my stuff in the past I enjoy collecting "Eagle" designs. So for me the Reverse Eagle details are far more important to me than what ever is on the Obverse when it comes to heavily circulated though expensive coinage. But with these old coins sometimes the pickings are slim at certain price points but I still enjoy them. I plan on sending them for authentication (sooner or later), although I'll hate the plastic slabs. But for these I look at the plastic slabs are more protection and authentication than anything else. Does anyone know if these are any specific attribution or what not? Enjoy. 1799 Dollar 1807 Half Dollar 1806 Quarter Dollar 1800 Half Cent
Very nice examples. Every coin in your collection doesn’t have to be perfect and problem-free. I think those are great examples for your small type collection. I have a seated half dollar set as a side project that can keep me busy when my main areas of collecting slow down. I am purposely looking for examples in either AG, G or F. I have a couple coins with scratches, one with a counterstamp and I will probably add some holed coins in the future. I think those imperfections add a little character to the set!
I'm thinking O-102 fits your half dollar the best. Not positive, the rim wear makes for a challenge, someone should check me. If I'm right it's a R.2 - slightly uncommon, 500 - 1000 estimated in existence.
The half cent is easy, 1800 only has one variety, C-1. I'll work on the quarter and the dollar later if no one jumps in with the varieties.
Very nice coins, unfortunate that the 1799 has a hole put through it, so it might not be worth authenticating. Still nice condition, seeing as your coins are 200+ years old
I just found this website for attribution ==> http://www.maibockaddict.com/1801-1802-and-1803-draped-bust-half-dollars.shtml Anyone know of any other website for the quarter, dollar, cent and half cents, half dimes and dimes ?
Yes it's holed and plugged. It was a good price. And yes .. it's amazing when you think this was over 200 years ago. I'm getting into Colonial coinage too and it's unbelievable what the world, society and the living and traveling environments were back then.
Claw: You could try ngccoins.com & keep digging till you get to Variety Plus Coin Variety Guide. I have found it useful, especially for early US copper. (I’ve got Overton & the other references for early silver.) D.
I just went to an auction that had a 1799 Draped bust graded AU 50 and noted that it had nice toning. It sold for $1,350. Way above my budget.
Oh great. an information website with an inventory .... Half Dime 1802 PCGS VG10 $157,500 lol only $157,499 above my budget. Guess I better start saving those pennies.
