At first glance I immediately assumed the damaged rim on this 1939 Jeff nickel was PMD however, after looking under magnification a few odd things showed up (I apologize for the poor scan quality but hopefully it is decent enough for someone to discern what exactly is going on here). The rim appears to be almost pushed up from the chipped section onto the surface of the coin. What makes this especially odd is that there appears to be a second star with clearly defined points under the rim section. It looks extremely odd under magnification with the naked eye to the point where I feel like the scan just doesn't do it justice but I am desperately trying to figure out what this is. I have been collecting and searching for error coins for years and haven't quite seen anything quite like this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
PMD - Post Mint Damage So how many years have you been searching for Mint errors? Welcome to CoinTalk
Thanks for the quick reply guys! I've been into it since around 2013. I took a pretty lengthy break for about a year and am now getting back into it! I have a fairly large collection and I am hoping to get some of my actual error coins confirmed on here and other forums in the coming weeks!
Your first glance was correct. Whatever hit the rim and caused the gouge/damage, forced some of the metal into the field. The extra star that you see is just the remnant of the displaced metal
Other forums? I don't know of any other forums besides CoinTalk And if there are.. They are our rivals!
The reverse is important on the 1939. Some have the reverse of 1938 and some have a doubled die on the letters in Monticello. It always pays to show both sides and sometimes the rim/edge.
