Get into coins, and for what reasons?

i am sure this question has been psed before, but I am curious.

for me it is abit of two things that got me into coins. My dad has collected for about 45 years and has always tried to get me into coins. when i was younger i really liked cars, bikes, and boats. not coins. i grew up in key west so they were alot of pretty girls to impress.
I never forgot some of what i picked up from my dad though.

in 03 i was crushed by 9000lbs of piledriver at work. it smashed both legs to putty really. so from there on i have had alot of time to just hang out. when i came to, my dad brought me a book for my birthday. QDB's Collecting and investing... To say the least I was hooked. I bought every coin book i could and spend the better part of 3 years reading.

I still would like to go back to work, but i would miss coins way to much.

I hope this explains abit why i am so passionate about coins.

Now if you dont mind, why do you care about coins???:D

My father got me collecting back in the late 1960s. I grew up on a rural farm with my brother and he (dad) owned a feed/ranch supply store. He would bring home all the change (coins) from the days transactions and we'd look thru it in the evening with the trusty RedBook right at out side. It (coin collecting & reading) kept the doldrums away after the chores were done.

    Take Care

You have to have patience and wait for people to find the thread. What got me into coins was in the 1960's my grandmother used to let me and my brother search her penny jars. My father would help. Then in the early 70's my father started buying proof sets. I used to look at them every year and want some, but no money. When I graduated from college in the 80's I started buying the proof sets the first year after that. I then bought just about everything the mint came out with. In 2000 when my mother passed away one of the things that helped my father was talking about coins - we decided we would start looking at things other than sold from the mint. Since then he is working on Morgans and I started several other sets. Me and my father talk coins all the time and we both enjoy it.

i got into this hobby after finding a solid gold sackajouia dollar in box of cheerios. i still can't believe that they would put solid gold coins in cereal boxes...a great marketing promotion i guess. i wonder if sales increased after word got out that one could find gold in their heart healthy breakfast.

it was love at first sight...i love gold, pretty indians, and cheerios.

My uncle in Detroit used to babysit us in the 60's and I helped him sort wheat bags. He bought me my first Whitman folder and I have been a Lincoln nut since. Took a break to play poker and collect guitars for a few years, but back with the fever again.......

My grandpa was like my dad when i was little, and i always loved going to his house. We would sort out wheaties together, go to the coin shop, attend shows and auctions (BTW, this was when i was 5-10). My grandpa always tought me a few things new about collecting. Well, one morning (actually 4 years ago yesterday) my dad woke me up, telling me my grandpa had died in his sleep, and that a lawyer had to talk to me and my parents. Well, my grandpa had left his collection to me. And yes, it is a VERY large collection. I thought it was very cool that he would do that for me, but i would still much rather have my coin buddie with me right now. Under the terms of his will, i can't have access to it untill im 21, to make sure i don't spend it when im a teenager. (BTW, im 14 for those of you who didn't know). Anyways, i picked up pace in collecting after he died, and now it's my passion.

Sorry to hear about your accident at work bajablu.
