Guys, i wanted to show you this coin i picked up years ago in a dealers box of assorted silver. As you can see, the coin has seen(much) better days, but i am also wondering if it is real, or a fake. The reason for this is that i paid very little money for it (about $10 back then), so how good can it be for that amount? On the other hand, it has some severe cuts/nicks on the edges, and some scratches. So it doesn't really make sense if it is a fake. I also bought an 1805 cent and a connecticut copper w/o date from this guy for about $65. Please let me have your opinions on this coin. I am really curious. Thanks!
As a 45 year merc collector, I would say that 21-D would be a prize for someone, nicks and all!! Looks real to me! I would be happy to double your money $20. lol
Tres, all, thank you guys for your comments. So you all think this is real....? I had almost convinced myself this was a fake, but only due to the price i paid. This is the only mercury dime i have. Then I may have screwed up here because i gave it to my younger son a while back, together with some states quarters, thinking it was a fake. Now i definitely need to make sure he stores it properly. As a matter of fact, i think i will store it for him..! Have a good weekend, and i hope the weather in your part of the world is better than ours. Regards, Eduard
Yea, that is not a low grade 21D. Most of the 21D mercs you see are hard to tell the date and mint. That one is in great shape. Sure it might have a few nicks, but compared to whats out there, Id agree with Jack, its worth a few hundred. Maybe not $550, but I dont see someone paying $200 plus out of the question. Nice coin.
Heres one. Not quite in as good shape as yours, but its missing the nicks. http://cgi.ebay.com/1921-Mercury-Di...ryZ41091QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Eduard, Nice 21-D! It appears to have EF details and with the deductions for the damge, it should still grade at VF-25 to VF-30 and would fetch $300 + in my opinion. I wish that I could find deals like that for $10 or even 10 times that! Frank
Wow guys, nice to wake up to this sort of news! thanks. I remember now another reason i thought this coin might be fake, its is due to the "1" in the date being weak, and a bit soft at the base. But i guess from your comments that it is OK. Regards, Eduard
VF-30+ details. The rim nicks hurt it but better on the rims than the surfaces! Submit to ANI and it will grade MS-67 lol. ANI grading, that really burns my butt that a coin that should be graded f-12 at best is slabbed au-55 and sold for $255 with 11 bids. ANI is a joke and the guy that sold it obviously has no morals.
