The reasonableness of NGC variety attribution - now recognizing the 1953 Proof 5c FS-401 RED-001

I had a refreshingly positive experience with variety attribution service from a TPG, and want to share some positivity with you fine folks.

I came across a 1953 5c RED FS-401. The 1952 5c REDs FS-401/402/403/404 were recently added to NGC's VarietyPlus page, but not the 1953 5c RED FS-401. Both are new to the latest CPG so I posted the following to the "Ask NGC/NCS" forum on the NGC chat board late one night:

"According to the Variety Plus listing, not all of the varieties new to the 6th Edition of the "Cherrypickers' Guide" Volume 1 are being attributed by NGC. Can someone please help me understand why?"

Around 8am the following day, David Lange posted a reply:

"[...] there have been evermore minor varieties added, and these include many coins that are not true varieties but simply die states. NGC has adopted these sparingly, adding them only when actual examples that may be photographed are submitted to it."

So I submitted this example with a note requesting it be reviewed for attribution as a 1953 PF 5c RED FS-401 variety. It was reviewed, attributed, re-holdered and photographed in about 10 "business days". They still need to add FS-401 to the VarietyPlus page and the Pop Report (currently showing FS-101 information), and I'm sure that their process to make those changes is already in motion.

I figured they would kill the grade but it got a 67. I still have much to learn.
