My only hypothesis is that he asked all his friends to bid on the auction, then after it "sold" he would relist it for $400, for example, and someone would jump in and buy it, thinking they got the deal of a lifetime.

Someone might think the 1888 is an 1888/7.

I know what you mean, but doesn't look like an 1888/7 to me.

There is something there to suggest it may be, but I wouldn't take a 4k gamble on that blurry and ambiguous of a photo.

The cud over UNITED means someone got a good deal on an 1888/7. Worth probably 8k-12k. Looks like an XF coin.

What cud? The little one right on the rim over the "N"?

Is that a cud? It looks more like a piece of dirt tom me, rather than a cud, or a 7 under the 8.

Yes. In fact, I was one of the bidders on these coins. Some folks are quick to cry "shill," but there's a reason it got bid so high.

That was the first thing I looked for. I concur with 1888/7

And if I'd listed those coins, the odds are good that I'd have missed the variety, listed them at what I considered a fairly hefty BIN, and been surprised when they sold so quickly.

And alarmed when I realized the buyer was @C-B-D.

Oh, I actually didn't bid that high or anywhere very close to that $4,000 mark. I wasn't sure enough that it was the 88 / 7. But once I saw all the bids in the last second I figured somebody must have been sure.

Or two bidders THOUGHT it was.

    Heck of a gamble.
